1309200 2012-10-28 09:45:00 Well how can they do that -- Most places will put your car up on a hoist, check under it for various things.. So mobile hoists ??

Nothing wrong with 6 monthly.

Bet anything you like they wont pull up some of the "boy racers" or little dicks as the Mrs calls them with their cars lowered, and tires scraping the guards, or lowered so low they cant go over the lowest speed hump without wiping out everything underneath. They would be to scared to.

1309201 2012-10-28 10:21:00 Cant see how they can compare to Brisbane.

Here they only have a safety cert, and this is only done when the ownership is transferred, It results in many modern cars being written off due to lack of basic maintenance. The best method is to drive a new or near new car otherwise the risks of getting ripped are too high.

The AU I recently bought was a write off, the cost of fixing the oil leaks was more then the purchase price, The mechanic suggested the wreckers and valued it at $400.

Also, The checks on the side of the road, Thats run by the cops, Maybe the mechanics are on a different payroll, But its still a waste of resources, and not done on a big enough scale to matter to anyone ever. I don't think Ive seen one since I have been back.

If you are driving a shitter, it has no value, its not worth fixing, Let the cops take it.

1309202 2012-10-28 19:18:00 Yeah fact of the matter is the NZ roads aren't fantastic to begin with, the majority of people here don't know basic maintenance about a car (As mentioned in the article) and we also end up with a ton of "old Jap imports" because of our No. 8 Wire attitude where we can get "some guy we know" to fix almost any problem with a car, and we're cheap, so we have a lot of older cars. I know I drive a '93 model and my wife drives a '94 model.

Annual inspections are a horrible idea, I can't see any benefit at all from them.

1309205 2012-10-28 22:41:00 There is a reason why no other country in the world has extensive 6 months inspections of cars and trucks and that is because its stupid. And people who want it are very stupid as well. But no we cant get reason on a 75 year law.
The WOF rule came in before WW2 which was a while ago for brake and steering problems for cars from around WW1 era, WW1 was a while ago as well.

1309206 2012-10-28 23:12:00 And when your car fails its proprietary roadside test (as it inevitably will) you will be issued with a ticket requiring you to pay a fine to the inspecting company (like parking fines in Wellington.) Of course your car will fail. How else would the company stay in business? Like the garages who fail WOFs so as to enhance their repair business. Funny thing is, even with a brand new WOF, no company will guarantee your car won't blow up in the middle of Queen Street (or elsewhere) and incinerate you and all your passengers.

Thankfully the Government can reassure us that "your car, like your personal data, is safe with us!"

Hekia Parata or Paula Bennett for Transport minister, take your pick

1309209 2012-10-28 23:32:00 Well I can honestly say that in the hundreds of WOF’s I’ve put through on numerous cars, being my Own, my Wife’s, my Kids and my Company’s, and the number of failures, there has never been one occasion when the failure could or would have caused an accident.

They’ve all been petty stuff like a spot of rust within 150mm of a hinge, frayed end on tail pipe, (That one I pulled out a hacksaw and cut 15mm of the end of the pipe and went around to the retest and passed), rear seatbelt a little slow to recoil (It had never been used), CV joint with a click on full lock, small stone chip on windscreen, the list goes on with none of them endangering anyone.

Therefore, on my own experience, I can only conclude that the vast majority of WOF failures would not have contributed in any way to an actual accident had they gone unnoticed.

However, for those who don’t mind wasting money, I have no objection to them having their car checked by a mechanic on a weekly basis if they so desire.

Just don’t compel me to follow suit. ;)

As I’ve said before, the cause of most accidents is the “Nut” behind the wheel, which isn’t part of a WOF. ;)
