1308639 2012-10-25 10:38:00 As per my post in chill's thread the other day, I'm after a new phone.
I'm running off down to henderson tomorrow for a few things, gonna look around at a few phones too. Want 2 degrees, android. Decent camera is really desired for those occasional pics, mp3 player would be awesome. GPS would also be neat.
Was looking at a couple for 200ish, but many seem to be running Android 2.3. Given what was said in the other threads, such phones aren't really the android experience people laud and desire, so I was gonna try get something with 4 or better.

The only ones running 4 or higher seem to be huawei, and I've just been told they're pretty **** phones. I'd believe it, given the state of my old vodafone modem.
That or they're too expensive -_-
Are many of the older ones able to be flashed up to newer versions with much success?

So any suggestions in my current price range of like, 200-250 ish that meet the above sort of criterion, or should I just curb my enthusiasm and get a more expensive one over the xmas hols?

1308640 2012-10-25 10:47:00 You could trying rooting the phone, then try and find a rom / update thats got 4+ on it. Altho if it was made for 2.3/2.3 it probably wont make any diff, updating to 4+ if its speed is crap Speedy Gonzales (78)
1308641 2012-10-25 10:50:00 I'm not particularly familiar with the world of android devices, what with running a nokia 2310 at the moment. Are there any major differences in terms of features, functions, etc that they can do?

Ideally I'd want to run games and music for on the bus and out for walks n stuff, a few useful apps, the camera and have it not run like a total POS. Reading the prior posts it seems like 4 and 4.1 or whatever have significant bonuses and speed boosts over previous iterations.

1308642 2012-10-25 12:53:00 Yeah *heaps* different mate.

They'll *all* come with GPS, and can all play MP3s standard too.

Given your budget, you could always go for a 2nd hand Galaxy S or Nexus S. They upgrade to Jellybean real easy :) Brand new your best bet would be to look at saving for the likes of the Galaxy Nexus.

Alternatively, import yourself a Nexus 7, you can land one for ~$270, if you're just looking to get in to Android, and keep a phone as just a "dumb" phone.

Go into one of the stores and have a play with the Galaxy S3 and the One X. They're outta your price range, but if you're going to admire a piece of hardware, then you wanna admire the One X, mate they're amazing :D

From what you have said previously you don't really get to admire the hardware with their horrible version of Android.

1308646 2012-10-25 23:31:00 Yeah the bastardized Android that comes with them I can't stand in the slightest, there are a *lot* of things that irk me, which is why I flashed my One X within a couple of hours of getting it. I'd never realized how horrible those interfaces really are.

Running standard Ice Cream Sandwich, and subsequently Jellybean, and I couldn't be happier! Amazing hardware (The One X is a fantastic piece hardware-wise, the ceramic back feels fantastic, the camera is superb, the screen is an absolute delight to use, it's light, and UBER fast), coupled with what is now the best software, the way Google intended it ... It's winning combination.

But yeah, the Galaxy S or Nexus S are dead simple to upgrade to Jellybean. I've still got a whole ton of mates who are *very* happy with their Galaxy S phones, all running the latest Android-4.1 Jellybean, and man does Jellybean give those phones a new lease on life! The speed improvement is *massive* and it's a shame Samsung aren't officially updating everybody.

1308648 2012-10-26 05:03:00 Well, I ended up agonising over a Galaxy Ace, mini and Gio. Could have gotten a Gio for around 250 with phone, sim and top up, or the Ace for 275.
Instead got the Mini for 178 with a sim. Not bad, a friend of mine has one so I'm sure it's going to work out nicely. Plus it leaves me money for other things :)

I figured since the only difference between the most expensive one I looked at and the one I got was a flash and a couple megapixels on the camera and a few million colours and 0.3 inches of screen, while being 100 dollars apart.
I very nearly got the Ace but considering the upgrade from my current phone, I'm still very happy :)
