134329 2003-04-08 06:27:00 Hi Team

I'm getting a bit frustrated by the slowness of the Accupoint mousing device on my laptop compared to using a normal mouse. The manual says I can use a PS2 mouse (via the port replicator) and says both devices can be used simultaneously, however it doesn't mention using a USB mouse.

Does anybody know if a Logitech USB 3-button mouse with scroll wheel can be used wih this laptop and if I should disable the Accupoint before plugging in the USB mouse. I presume that W2K will have the drivers available.

Cheers

134331 2003-04-08 08:26:00 Okay . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ?:|

But what do I do if W2K installs drivers that stuff up the accupoint? Presumably I could uninstall via the add/remove programs but I am risk-averse until I get an image of the present HDD setup .

I can't do that until I find out how to partition the existing C: drive into C: & D: without stuffing up the existing OS installation . I am stepping outside my experience right now, and I don't have a program that can create such a partition (at least I don't think I have, unless Ghost GDisk can do that) .

Any suggestions?

134332 2003-04-08 10:19:00 Thats a good point that you've got there. I just usually run the risk with everything. But then ofcourse I hardly ever have anything which really *matters* whether I lose it or not. I should start a back-up plan at some stage.

Can't Ghost do a backup onto a network drive?

134333 2003-04-08 10:42:00 Yes it can, but I was aiming to get the image onto a second partition so that I could restore from a boot disk if away from my network.

This is all part of my risk management setup as I introduce the laptop to full use. I don't regard the restore CD as a viable backup because I would still have to reinstall all my programs and the online registration ceases to function. MS might get a bit minty about providing too many phone registration keys when they can't check the hardware you are installing on.

The company I work for buys Toshiba laptops as a rule although not this model of Portege. When we were running Win2K we had no issue swapping between using and not using an external mouse - be it PS2 or USB. As far as drivers goes I suspect that the Logitech USB would not be a known device driver for Win2K, you will probably require the vendors drivers to use as part of the installation. You could try this by connecting it to the laptop and see how far through you can get before having to supply a disk with the driver and then if this is the case it is up to you as to whther or not you continue with the install. As a rule a PS2 mouse will just use the standard PS2 driver that comes with Win2K. My advice would be to try it, if it does not work out you could always remove the USB and Accupoint from the device manager list and do a re scan of the hardware. Win 2K should then see the Accupoint and reinstall the required driver. Yes there is a risk but unless you were to wait until you had a back up of your partition this could not be mitigated.

As an aside, you will probably need a third party partitioning tool such as Partition Magic if you going to try and repartition your single C: partition into a C: and D:. If my memory serves me right GDISK cannot repartition on the fly as you would require - Partition Magic can.

Hi Billy - you are in luck :-)

The Australian PC Authority April 2003 - issue 65 has on its cover disk the full version of PartitionMagic 6 all for only $8 . 95 .

Software details are:
Requirements:
Pentium or higher processor; 32 MB RAM; 50 MB free hard drive space; and Windows 95/98/NT/2000

Sounds ideal for what you want .

I got all excited when I saw this on the cover disk and purchased the magazine without reading the small print . . . . . .
Note: PartitionMagic 6 does not work with Windows XP

Now, all I have to do is find a copy. I assume it is stocked by most bookshops?

134338 2003-04-10 02:23:00 1. Why do you want to partition your hdd?
2. If you want to be able to reimage your laptop away from your network and not use the recovery disk Do this.
Make sure you have all the software that you want on your laptop
If you have a CDRW, just use Nero Burning Rom and go to file, burn image. It may take 7 or more CDRs. I have used this successfully reimaging 2 different laptops after crashes.
