134276 2003-04-08 04:40:00 I noticed on my home LAN's Internet Gateway PC (I use ICS) that ZoneAlarm is loaded only when a user logs in.
Does this mean that the PC is not secure prior to that point, i.e. when the user list login panel is displayed after a previous user has logged out ? Reason for asking : at that time one or both of the client PCs may be connected to the Internet via the LAN and hence the ADSL connection is open for business.
If this is the case, how can I get around it - for example, is the Internet Connection Firewall built into XP active on the gateway whenever the connection is open regardless of whether anyone is logged in on the gateway ? Firewalls are not enabled on the client PCs.
TVMIA for any help.

134277 2003-04-08 10:05:00 Are all the computers using Win XP? If so then I would imagine that the Win XP firewall can be enabled on all the machines. This is quite adequate for protection from "outside" (I tested mine today and it passed with flying colours) but it will not prevent communications going out (eg trojans, programs "calling home").

Are you using the ZoneAlarm Pro paid version or the free one? As far as I know the free one does not support ICS but don't quote me on that. Kerio does and is free.

134278 2003-04-08 10:34:00 The gateway and one client PC use XP, the other client uses W98SE. I'm mainly worried about what's happening when the gateway PC is on but no-one is logged in (ZoneAlarm not loaded) and a client PC is connected to the Internet, i.e. is the gateway vulnerable in that situation ?

I use the free ZoneAlarm. I have a license for the Pro version but it caused so much trouble that I gave up on it. You are right, ZoneAlarm Free does nothing for the client PCs in an ICS situation. I might look at Kerio but it won't be any good to me if it's not active in the above situation.

Thanks for your reply.

I thank it does,( Not too sure need to check that) because I have ICS on my network, & my computer is secure, that is what my dad says & I have test my computer on grc.com

134280 2003-04-08 10:46:00 Well, when I switch on my Win XP computer which is networked to a Win 98 PC Kerio loads up regardless of whether anyone is logged on. The Win 98 computer cannot connect to the internet without someone logging on to the Win XP to dial up (I am not on ADSL) but if everyone logs off Kerio is still running and protecting the Win 98 computer. That one does not have Kerio installed, only the Win XP one. Susan B (19)
