134131 2003-04-07 08:51:00 hi

I have a win98 machine and a win 2000 machine on a network.

On the win98 machine often the first time I click on network neighbourhood no computers can be found. Shut it down and reclick and up pops the win98 machine but not the win2000 machine. However, I have mapped the win2000 drives on the win98 machine and with My Computer, I can access the various drives on the win2000 machine even when it is not shown on My neighbourhood

First question. Why is the network response on the win98 machine so variable.

I have real problems in accessing the win98 machine from the win2000 machine even when the win98 machine is trucking along nicely.

Second question why is the win2000 machine so very variable and what can I do to sort it out??

cheers

134132 2003-04-07 09:19:00 You haven't mentioned whether you are running fixed IP addresses or dynamic. This can make a bit of difference. The principal problem though is the way the computers communicate over the network. If you are running fixed IP addresses as soon as you turn your computer on it should be saying "hello" to the other PC. :)

From your description it would appear that you are running dynamic addresses. This can cause quite a delay before addresses are sorted out.

Some solutions are to create a LMhosts file on both PC's and use fixed IP addresses.

HTH :)

134133 2003-04-07 09:23:00 generally it just takes time for pcs to finally get listed under my network due to the time it takes to "inventory" then network. Even if its a p2p ( peer to peer ) it can take time from 5 minutes to well I've seen half an hour on some networks.

Checking to see you have the right sharing permissions etc and also that you're using the same network protocols eg: tcp/ip on both pcs ( oh and also ip addys too like 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 and on the other pc 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 ) and say removing NetBEUI and ipx/spx and lastly check that you have the most recent drivers for your network cards.
