| 133970 | 2003-04-07 03:52:00 | I have a USB d-link modem on a laptop running xp It always connects but often does not allow me to download anything or even to log on. All other usb devices work fine mouse printer etc Tried running only modem ie no other usb devices. Adjusted all my settings seem to make little difference as it will work sometimes and then not others |

| 133972 | 2003-04-07 04:25:00 | I would believe USB modems are just like Ethernet except different connection type. Your USB modem should have a private IP address that you would connect too? I'm not sure I've never used USB modems but I think you would set up IE to point to that IP as the gateway. Tools/Internet Options/Connection/Lan Settings/ Here you can try the Automatically Detect Settings but usually I prefer the manual connection but that does depend on if the USB modem has it's own IP. If it does have it's own IP then use that in the manual configuration part. It could also be that you are not being assigned an IP when it's connecting due to the lack of IP's an ISP is given. Is there anyway of seeing if it's connected and what IP it's recieved? You could also have a DNS problem, I've had problems connecting to Paradise's DNS which I've solved by changing it to Xtra's DNS. |

| 133975 | 2003-04-07 10:02:00 | Sorry No it connects as normal shows the connection speed window normally around 48kbs It will start to download a page very slowly then stop, going to the "unable to display page" as if not connected but all the time it shows connected and sounds conected when I check the phone line I can try to refresh or change page but its as if it is off line. All of a sudden it will go off line. However sometmes it will download as normal and I can surf for hours without any hassel but its pot luck if it works. What I was wondering is there another type to get me on line nb I have no serial port these modern upto date pc's eh thanks again |

| 133976 | 2003-04-07 10:20:00 | Hi 2 cents worth. sounds more like software, modem setup, IE or windows(?) This is a dial in modem isn't it (48KBs). Cheers Murray P |
