134184 2003-04-07 23:49:00 Well, I did encounter the same problem when I was on Jetstart, but after 'upgraded' to Jetstream 500 a couple of months ago, the problem seems to be gone with Jetstart!

So, I concluded that it's Telecom's fault.

134185 2003-04-08 00:32:00 Yeah, I am about to try moving the PC to nearer the phone socket, but I have my doubts that this will fix the issue, as it ALWAYS disconnects when I load something of the HDD.

The odd thing is that if I am playing a game online, I have to load the game, then switch back to windows, dial then switch back to the game, and it is OK... I conclude to this that it isn't processor load that is the issue - i could be wrong though.

The PC is an athlon 1200, with 384Mb SDRAM, running winXP pro SP1, and about 40Gb of unused disk space, with minimal software running at any given time.

I am thinking that possibly power might be an issue so I am going to remove all the drives and PCI cards that I can get away without, and try again...

Is there anything else that I have overlooked??

Cheers,
Craig

134186 2003-04-08 07:02:00 Another update: I have removed two drives, a regular modem and a LAN card from my PC as well as some USB stuff to reduce the load on the PSU

Problem still occurs

I set the priority of everything I could find relating to my adsl modem to high.

Problem still occurs

I moved the PC to next to the ADSL socket, and connected - and lo

Problem still occurs

What am I missing - should I take the modem back for a refund / replacement??

Cheers,
Craig.

134187 2003-04-08 07:06:00 By the way - it is an internal modem - i know other ppl with same modem who have no worries with same OS and lower spec machines (different house they live in tho... could still be an installation issue, but I really doubt that now.....) craig_b (2740)
134188 2003-04-08 09:02:00 I have a rather similar problem, except my ADSL is external and connect through a hub! I have no idea what the problem is. As with you, it drops the connection when I load applications. demonmors (1299)
134189 2003-04-08 11:19:00 Whats your connect rate showing? Is it a self install or a full Telecom one?

134190 2003-04-09 01:56:00 It is a full telecom install, and conect rate is shown as 672 / 7162 or something very similar - but I only have jetstart, so I only get the limited rate...

Whne the telecom guy was installing it I got him to test it both right next to the socket, as well as on the same 15m extension it was on until last night - both showed very similar results - above 650 and above 7000...

I am going to take my PC to a mates house tomorrow night and test it on his self installed xtra jetstart connection, and see if the problem still occurs...

Are there any diagnostic tools I can get, or something that will test the modem and adsl connection, or something I can use to log what is happening on the machine at the disconnect point??

Something I have found too - the connection will die when I load an app regardless of what app it is, and also regardless of what resources it uses and whether I am using the connection or not... The adsl monitor always shows "No Signal" for the duration of the app load, then switched to "Training" for a while, then back to "Data" at which time I can dial out again...

Cheers,
Craig.

134191 2003-04-09 02:09:00 i wonder if we can get Pluto in this conversation, he works for a help desk (i'm sure he deals with Telecom or Xtra customers) sc0ut (2899)
134192 2003-04-09 04:41:00 If you are working off an extension phone junction, try using another box the same as the main phone intake box, I think it's illegal to have 2 of the same strength. What the hell my son is in the defence force and may need to call quickly!!.
