134156 2003-04-07 10:54:00 My OS ( win 98 ) suddenly, (as of about a week ago), started running really slow --- not snappy at all as it used to be.
From the moment it first boots it starts to drag it's heals --- have scan disked & defragged, run through all the startup options in msconfig without a difference.
When windows finnally loads I'v got only 1 meg or less of ram up for grabs, so I'll realease another 40 odd, ( via "free mem std" of the pc world disk -- of course), but still every program seems to have lost it's snap --- 30 seconds just to get to the screen saver applet, ( I'm serious -- 30 sec's is a long time -- try staring at that hour glass your self that long).
I'v run out of ideas --- anyone got any more ?
Thanks in advance -- Richard -- LOL

134157 2003-04-07 11:37:00 Run Spybot (free off the Web). Also JV16 powertools (again free). Run Spybot, then jv16. On jv16, open program and go registry tool->tools->registry cleaner. On the first list that comes up, untick "show ignored entries" and then keep press OK. After it is finished, go select-> all and "delete. Restart PC and see if it has improved. Pheonix (280)
134158 2003-04-07 11:47:00 Have you got plenty of HDD space? Is there frantic HDD activity while its going slow? godfather (25)
134159 2003-04-07 11:47:00 For one screen savers are actually unnessary for todays monitors but for your other problem I think you need to run Ad_Aware or some such program. One program or another is hogging cpu time. You don't have an HP do you as they have a lot of phone home programs the keyboards especially. mikebartnz (21)
134160 2003-04-07 12:07:00 There is a virus called "pretty park" which places a file in Windows which filters everything and slows everything down.

Pretty Park Virus Fix.
See below to fix it.

Manual removal instructions:
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
Type REGEDIT, then click OK.
Modify the following Registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Classes\exefile\shell\open\command
and change
files32.vxd "%1" %*
to
"%1" %*
For clarity, these seven characters are the following: double quote, percent sign, the numeral one, double quote, space, percent sign, and asterisk. Don't forget the space.
Delete the PrettyPark.exe file.
Restart your computer.
Using Windows Explorer delete the \Windows\System\Files32.vxd file.

134161 2003-04-07 21:28:00 If you have recently installed any new programs uninstall them run adaware, spybo,t regcleaner etc do a defrag empty out all rubbish files I use washandgo or windowwasher make sure you run a up to date virus checker and I also use zonealarm to check on what is running , startman is very good as well to gewt rid of the excess startup programs you can live without . kiwibeat (304)
