134102 2003-04-07 07:26:00 I'd like to be able to play the stream audio and video files that are found in some websites, but I do not like the invasive approach of real networks and their real player. Is there an alternative to it? Even if I have to pay for the software, I do not mind.
Thank you for your thoughts.

134103 2003-04-07 08:29:00 I use UltraPlayer free from: http://www.ultraplayer.com/
and also Real Player 8. You can get earlier version Real Players which are a bit less invasive from: forms.real.com

If you disable all the bells and whistles and anything that tries to connect out, and remove comet cursor etc then its not too bad, so many sites use Real audio/video that its worth having.

UltraPlayer will also play Real audio/video as well as other formats.

134104 2003-04-07 08:29:00 You can always download the latest NetScape (or on the latest PCW Cover Disc) which has Real Player 8.

Otherwise, look online for RealG2 Player and Realplayer 8 :-)

Google should bring up a few results :-)

134105 2003-04-07 08:38:00 Thank you Terry. I have tried to install real player 8, but as soon as I go online and try to listen to some streaming media it starts jumping up and down and won't let me listen to it until I upgrade.
Is there a way to stop the thing from wanting to upgrade to realone so that I can keep and use the older version?

134106 2003-04-07 20:54:00 Well, I occasionally get an update alert, but in View -Preferences, General tab Start Centre is turned off, in Upgrade, the notification is turned off (for 30 days), no Real Product Flashes, do have lots of different plugins. In Content, only language is enabled, the rest is disabled.

But it's also possible that I dont get update alerts because I live in a 1920s/30s time warp and only listen to old dance band music etc :)

134107 2003-04-07 21:12:00 I forgot to add that using an older version player is a compromise as it won't necessarily play audio/video that has been encoded using the later Real encoders. Terry Porritt (14)
134108 2003-04-07 21:49:00 I just use the older realplayer 8 with everthing turned off when installing untick evedrthing and scroll down as well to remove the hidden menus kiwibeat (304)
