134521 2003-04-09 07:09:00 So, do you work at one of these places? Or used to (I'm sure Babe Ruth did), or know someone who does, and would give a discounted price to me or CC.

I'm going to apply for a Lottery Grant, and if successful, will get up to $5000... and I need that money to cover a lot of things. Eg, parts for a good server (we're talking the new P4 with HT technology, and Windows Server 2003, and Serial ATA HDDs, in a RAID configuration if that is possible at the moment).

Help me out here please!

134522 2003-04-10 06:18:00 This is so sad... no replies...

As I said before, please help me out here.

134523 2003-04-10 06:38:00 Well it would be kind of nice to know what this is for? -=JM=- (16)
134524 2003-04-10 07:27:00 I deal with these guy's with work. May be worth an enquiry with, they are quite competitive (with dealers anyway). http://www.morningstar.co.nz/ Pheonix (280)

Agent, I think I know what the project is, from previous PF1 posts, and its a good one.
Consider though, a similar request for a lottery grant from a group such as an RSA club wanting to buy a van for taking less mobile members for outings.

If they asked for a BMW X5, (which is, by comparison, what you want) or they asked for a late model used vehicle, which would do the same job, which proposal do you think would have more chance?

I have had experience in similar areas, and this is purely a personal view.

134526 2003-04-11 06:40:00 It's not about want, more than need. I do expect that, once finished, the website will be visited a lot. I can't be stuck using a 1.5GHz CPU with 512MB of RAM and a 40GB HDD that could fill up very quickly.

And, considering what CC is planning to use for the firewall, then bandwidth will be quite limited (I'm asking for a direct 1GB/s cross over connection of course... I guess 100MB/s could cope.

Also, the fact that the site is very much database-driven, the overhead on the server could potentially be very great. No, we can't afford an expandable rack server, though that would be nice.

So what's this for? Well, I want to get quotes on the prices available. In order to apply for a Youth Lottery Grant, we need to send in a couple of letters of community support (any volunteers? ;)), the price of what we want to buy, etc etc. It's rather difficult, and the fact that we may be declined is in my mind. This whole project is volunteer-based, and I've done enough of my rambling for today, so I think I'll either wait for some more replies, or go around XP Computers, the Computer Flea Market at Ellerslie Primary, Compulink, Eden Computers, Global Computers (think that's where Liam works).

134527 2003-04-11 06:46:00 And as for the servers specs:

I estimate that we need at least
a 2GHz CPU (and Intel would be better for this, though at a more costly price)
a full tower case, pref with front USB sockets
400w PSU
system fan
cpu heatsink/fan (thinking of the Volcano 9)
at least one SerialATA HDD, 80GB
mobo with onboard ethernet, pref 1GB/s, though 100MB/s could well cut it, supporting SerialATA and a RAID configuration
1GB DDR-RAM, pref the 533 type
Back-UPS? or at least a power surge protector junction box

and already provided components which we don't need:
keyboard, mouse, monitor, cd drive

and components we might need:
redundant PSU

134528 2003-04-11 07:16:00 Sounds like it must be for some fairly fairly high end website in that case getting A LOT of hits. If you want HDD speed you'd be going for a SCSI set up most likely. -=JM=- (16)
134529 2003-04-11 23:33:00 Oh bougre.

I was thinking that seeing as SATA is newer, it would be better. But I guess that a 10,000 RPM drive beats a 7,200 RPM one.

Anyone know if setting up a RAID array is difficult?
