134441 2003-04-09 00:24:00 Running Win ME on P2@233 with AGP (early ASUS m/bd with Intel LX chipset)
Plenty of RAM
S3Virge

Would a Geforce 440MX 64Mb be overkill on a P2@233 cpu 'puter (to replace S3Virge - just because I want to)

At $100 +/- I'm prepared to "splurge"

Any brand issues
eg: Chaintech

Any other likely issues

Greatful for any input / all thoughts etc

134442 2003-04-09 00:37:00 avoid chaintech if you can, personally I was going to get a Gainward 440MX from inhouse (http://www.inhouse.co.nz), but I found out they had a gf3 lying out the back which i got off them instead. you shouldnt have any problems with gainward.

you'd be wasting your money IMO, unless you are looking at upgrading the rest of your gear soon... your pc will be horridly unbalanced towards your vid card, you would get crap gaming results as your cpu, fsb and hdd are all bottlenecks... you'd be better off with a second hand Banshee or TNT2 if gaming is your thing...

I cant be sure if the 440LX AGP implimentation will be able to power a greedy nvidia card, its an intel chipset so you might be lucky, i know that an ali chipset of that era would topple easily under the strain...

134443 2003-04-09 00:50:00 Id suggest you got www.qmb.co.nz and check out their GF4 MX 440SE -T, worth the look, and pretty cheap.

It would work, and gamin gon things like Unreal Tournament would be good, but you're not gonna get much out of newer games, so an upgrade for the rest of the system is gonna be on the cards soon if you're a keen gamer, or a would-be keen gamer :-)

Hope this helps

Cheers

134444 2003-04-09 03:24:00 I think the GF4MX will be overkill. You would save a lot of money getting something second hand.

I upgraded a very similar system with an old Rage 128 Pro I had lying around, which is a much slower card, and it was very processor limited in games.

But it did make older games like Counterstrike, Quake 3, & Colin mcrae 2 playable.

BTW, If you do go with a GF4MX make sure it works with AGP 2x.

134445 2003-04-09 03:37:00 My GF4 was compatible right back to AGP 1x!

And saving a buck.. You'd save if you didnt go to DSE.. but try qmb.co.nz and its only a hundred bucks..

Ive seend a GF4 sell on Trademe for over $150!

4Meg PCI cards like the Trio 64+ go for up to $40ish

It may be overkill, but not too much.. the PC would handle doing 800x600 hopefully on Unreal Tournament.. would need 128MB RAM though...

134446 2003-04-09 04:10:00 I found one at www.pp.co.nz at $110 (Gainward GeForce4-MX440-SE MX 64MB AGP Video Card TV-Out) and it has a 2yr waranty. The one at http://www.qmb.co.nz was actually $111 (the $99 was without GST) and pp have free delivery anywhere in nz. promethius (1998)
134447 2003-04-09 05:11:00 you know you could get a 64MB onboard card is you get a new Motherboard
for around $300 (i know its mor than you want to spend but i don't think a 233 will run games well with that CPU speed)

134448 2003-04-09 05:25:00 for $280sh you can get this
www.soltekusa.com
i mean you'd switch to a AMD system
it is raited THE BEST AMD BOARD ON THE MARKET by this months Atomic mag
it also means you pay another
$60.75 = AMD Duron 1.10GHz
or
$115.88 = AMD Athlon XP1700+

its just another option

Thanks - you're dead right. Only that opens up a whole new can of worms because I'm fighting off the urge to splurge on a whole new machine, which I do NOT really need, just want.
Nonetheless, following your advice, I will check my ram specs to see what motherboard upgrades it can migrate to so as to minimise the expense of a motherboard upgrade

Then I guess I would want to find an old case/psu into which to shoehorn the old ASUS 440LX motherboard for Linux dabbling .....

the 'to do' list just goes on and on ...
