134617 2003-04-09 12:44:00 Telecom caps all Jet Start/Jet Stream Starter rates to 128K both up and downloads. I am yet to see an ISP state that they have a 256K.

See www.quicksilver.co.nz
and www.xtra.co.nz

Yes I agree different ISP's like Quicksilver do have different maximum monthly international traffic limits, i stand corrected.

Telecom does not cap the speeds. It's capped on your ISP's account, Telecom do not control the capping, your ISP does, if your speeds are exceeding what you should be getting then you can thank your ISP for stuffing up.

Here is what Telecom offer, then in addition check with your ISP.

After reading the above, one would be well misinformed!

To the above I would add that the Telecom Jetstream Starter, where the DSL service is carried on Telecom lines, and is a Telecom product (irrespective of ISP) the speed is 128k. In both directions.

Its not strictly ADSL its DSL in this case, (to add to the confusion) as the A = assymetrical isn't there, as it is in the higher speed systems where the upload and download speeds are Assymetrical.

Using Xtra as the ISP, national traffic is unlimited, international is capped at 5 GB. The surcharge only applies to international traffic above the 5 GB cap.

Sorry but it is still ADSL as it is still assymetical as the connection speed will show you if you look. The fact that you only get 15-18KB/s both ways means nothing. To test this go onto the Jet Stream Games connection and you will get a real taste of the full speed.
My connection is currenty showing a connection speed of 7616 Mbps of DL and 608 Mbps of UL so clearly shows it is ADSL.

134623 2003-04-10 09:42:00 On the Jetstream Games site its a full ADSL, I agree. In that mode it is not operating as Jetstart however.
On a standard Jetstart 128k connection (NOT via the Games site), its operating in DSL mode.

134624 2003-04-10 09:59:00 Nope as I said it may appear DSL because packets are dropped to make it look like 128kbps but it is still full ADSL. Check it out in your modem and it will tell you so.

And I lied above. Mine show 7616kbps and 606 kbps which clearly shows it is ADSL and it is on JetStart not JetStream.

If you don't beleive me believe your modem wich should tell you the connection rate. Don't go by the data flow rate as that is controlled differently.

134625 2003-04-10 10:27:00 So your saying that JetStart is complete ADSL capped at 128k. Does this mean you can be uploading and download at 128k/s simultaneously???

ie downloading 15+Kbytes/sec and uploading 15+Kbyte/sec at the same time.

??

134626 2003-04-10 10:42:00 Well, I may as well say it again:
The limit is ISP dependant.

Speed:
Jestart/Jetstream Start (Same diff.) = 128kbps for most ISPs, however I believe mosta re upping it to 256K
JetStream = Maxing out at 8mbps, dependant on how close you are to the exchange. Realistically, Id think most get 5-7Mbps!

Now, the plan depends on what you sign up for. Im soon going to be upgrading my Dial-Up with Ihug to Jetstream Starter, and I get 10Gigs of International Traffic, and unlimited National traffic!
ICONZ and MaxNet offer unlimiter for both on Jetstream Starter.

JetStream Starter is limited by the ISP AFAIK, as some users have reported mornings where they get full JetStream speeds on downloads.

JetStream Games (When properly logged in) will give you the full JetStream speeds!

Hope this clears things up a little!

Cheers
