134343 2003-04-08 08:24:00 OS win98 .Why do I ,after leaving my computer on and not using it for say 20 minutes, I get the message, (System resources are dangerously low, do you wish to terminate this program). I know things have gone amiss because when I click onto the start menu , a blank box comes up and I have to turn the power off and get things to start again.
I have 10GB hard drive and are only using 6 GB. This has happened every day for the last 3 months.Every thing seems to jam up and I try hitting ctrl/alt/del, and I get the box coming up ,( as I have mentioned above), It asks to terminate a program, but however many programs I close down it makes no difference . I regularly run defrags etc etc but to no avail.Help

134344 2003-04-08 08:34:00 Older Windows operating systems (95,98,ME) allocates "pointers" in a table of memory to each program, so the programs do not over-write each other, or screen images are kept separately. (This is an over-simplification, but hopefully will convey the meaning)

Windows 98 has a predefined number of these pointers, they are an integral part of the Operating Sytem and you cannot change the number available.

They are not specifically related to Hard Disk space or the amount of RAM.

When a program uses these pointers, it should also release them when it has finished. Unfortunately not all programs behave correctly, and fail to release them. This is when you get the "low resources" error.

A reboot will always fix it (and I used to do that 4 times a day)

Some programs are worse than others.

Some utlity programs claim to force the release of unused resources, but as I use XP, which does not suffer from this problem, I cannot advise on their effectiveness.

134345 2003-04-08 08:45:00 Yes, dont try downloading utilities to fix the problem as they won't, and infact will just put more strain on your system.
What you need to do is not load the programme that is gobbling all these "pointers" (godfather wasn't 100% correct in his terminology, but for the sake of simplicity take godfathers view)
now to stop this prog.
1. run msconfig and disable any progs that you don't need
2. take note of the progs you are running and which prog causes your system to crash.

Don't know about the validity of your statement but I've had good success with Win98 PCs in my company by using RAMPAGE, a free software. I set RAMPAGE to release resources if below 12MB. Non of my users have complained since and they don't have to reboot their PC several times each day.

134347 2003-04-08 23:21:00 Sounds a little as if it has more to do with a misbehaving screen saver to me. Try changing the screen saver. Screen savers are actually programs with a special extension. mikebartnz (21)
134348 2003-04-09 05:43:00 try startman and uninstall or disable some of your start programs I also use cacheman for memory management kiwibeat (304)
134349 2003-04-09 05:56:00 Hi I also run 98 and in the past I have had the same problems but Cacheman has stopped all system lockups and blue-screens.
Also Ctrl-Alt-Del if you End Task on Explorer this is as good as a reboot.

134350 2003-04-09 08:51:00 well as godfather has pointed out these pointers aka "Resources" Have nothing to do with RAM aka Memmory, so the progs talked about in this thread are invalid.

I suggest a read up on the differences between RAM and Resources, as its a common problem.

134351 2003-04-11 07:57:00 98 doesnt always release resources so a reboot is necessary after lots of activity cacheman helps in my opinion , but try to avoid opening too many windows at once or running multipal programs at once unless you have lots of ram 256 upwards . kiwibeat (304)
134352 2003-04-11 09:01:00 cacheman.............. invalid. Doesn't do a thing in this situation
Read up on the subject!
