I'm trying to defrag but cannot get past Checking for errors 4%. Says I have to run scandisk. I've done this numerous times including a thorough test overnight. Tried MSDefrag, Power defrag, Plain Defrag. Any thoughts on how to overcome this problem? Thanks David

135082 2003-04-11 21:33:00 Have you tried it in Safe Mode?

Get to SafeMode by pressing F8 during POST, when you boot up.

135085 2003-04-12 01:05:00 Defragging is perhaps the most over used and over discussed PC maintenance tool of all. In most cases it provides a very small marginal performance improvement at the cost of a huge amount of "downtime." Of course it can, and should be done when you don't need your computer. Do the math, you know what sequential and random access times are for your disk. You can find out how badly fragmented your files are. Then assume you load a 1000 files an hour. You will be surprised at the incredibly small benefit. Good file management by partitioning your drives wisely will minimize fragmentation over time. Then defragging can easily be a quarterly PM.
Fully automatic defragmentation is best of all simply as it is a time-saver. Raxco
CAN defragment your drive perfectly but this takes an inordinate amount of time and
is very slow. Certainly it does put all of the directories together as will Norton's
speed disk, but for pure labour/time saving which, only this afternoon, produced
a report of ZERO defragmentation I find that Diskeeper 7 is probably the best, although
I hear that O&O is good too, on NTFS.

When the directories ARE together the disk fizzes lightly and the speed IS improved,
when they are not then there is more of a crackle from the disk.

But if you have a 2.5GHz P4 and DDRAM, a fast bus speed, and a fast disk, [10,000
/ 15,000 rev/min] I doubt if you would see the difference although you CAN hear it.

Two interesting replies!!

135086 2003-04-12 03:41:00 FAQ 5 FAQ20 are no help.
The defrag only gets to 4% and then says there are disk errors and to run scandisk. I do this and no errors reported. Scaned for viruses using McAffee, no viruses. Run in safe mode same problem. Closed all startups in msconfig. Unplugged network connection. Edited system ini vcache to lower MaxFileCache to 524,288.
Purchased PC Booster from WcAffee that changed MaxFileCache to 195750. What next?? David

135087 2003-04-12 04:35:00 Have you tried a 'thorough' scandisk? Never tried it myself because I've never needed to but could be worth a try?

Takes ages, I understand.

Aren't computers fun? Beats jigsaws and cryptic crosswords any day.

135088 2003-04-12 04:50:00 Do you have norton System works,if not worth a try, it has a good system to defrag, Thomas (1820)
135089 2003-04-12 05:32:00 Thomas, yes performance gain is small. But also remember that it creates less wear&tear on the hard drive if the files it access's are fragmented badly. With hard drives becoming faster and bigger in storage, finer tolerances are used by the manufacturer, so less wear&tear, the longer your disk will last.
Now to the problem in hand. I have had the same problem and used Norton's Sytem works Disk Doctor. It found a problem, fixed it and then I was able to defrag OK. Just defrag in safe mode, it saves a lot of clashes with other programs such as anti-virus progs.

135090 2003-04-14 02:57:00 use norton utils or fix-it to solve what may be a registry problem then do a defrag kiwibeat (304)
