135577 2003-04-14 00:10:00 Can anyone tell me how many Virus Definitions I should have with Nortons Anti Virus 2001.

I have just completely updated and find I have 63410 definitions. I could have sworn I previously had a swag more. (67,000??)

Also, is there anyway to test if NAV is actually working. (It’s years since it generated any excitement :D )

I have Norton 2002 and it too says 63410 viruses, so I am sure you are fine.

135580 2003-04-14 02:20:00 Hi B.M.

Norton regularly remove old definitions so the number can shrink. Look in whatsnew.txt inside the virus definition folder to see what has been changed each time.

To check your system, go to eicar.com (I think) and download a test virus.

Put it in a separate folder on its own and it should be found by eacjh scheduled scan. Don't set your options to automatically repair as it will be disabled the first time NAV runs. Set to advise or notify and cancel out after the scan, ignoring the warnibgs that you may still have a virus.

The text below is the standard eicar signature so you could try copying and pasting into notepad. Save as eicar.com

X50!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Be warned, your AV might argue with you and you may have to close it temporarily to set this up. Once successfully ensconced in your chosen folder, do a manual scan of just that item and NAV should blow the whistle. If it doesn't you may need to check for spaces etc as I can't be sure that there is not a hidden space at the beginning or end of my C & P.

Eicar also has test virii for compressed files too.

Incidentally, if you execute this file, a black dos-like window will open with a hyphen bouncing diagonally up the screen like an old ping-pong game!

Cheers
