135571 2003-04-13 20:47:00 I have got my claws on a laptop which has colored stripes on the screen. The stripes move or disappear if i apply gentle pressure to various points on the plastic just below the screen. I am assuming that there is a bad connection somewhere, but am not going to open it up and have a go myself.

The laptop is a dell inspiron 3200. (P2 266)

Any ideas what it will take to fix it?

The wee cards that were for modem/network are long gone.
Any ideas what the cards are worth?

Is it possible to get an infrared port for my PC so i can connect to lappy my network/internet?
(I don't really know what is involved here.)

Would such a lappy run a newer Linux OK?

Any ideas what the lappy is worth?

135572 2003-04-13 22:43:00 laptop screen is horrendous to fix. i would never consider. jus sell and buy another.

the mini cards called mini-pci cards. the modem/ethernet is usually a 3Com or a Intel. These last yr were $450nz from IBM. All the companies use the same ones. Mini Pci is like a PCI card - standard in all laptops. In NZL I have never seen before, trademe i seen modem alone its about $30-40nz. eBay currently at $10US since laptop these days all have builtins so the addons are pretty useless on the market other than replacement or if u have one that accomodate a LAN and currently only have a modem. U swap the two cards making it a combo instead....

Infra-red, yes via PCMCIA or a dinky little USB nub thats connects on without wiring. like the bluetooth thing in the last DSE catalogue mailout. Some are about the size of a adult's thumb. Sourcing these in NZ is hard thou... Trademe has one larger one search for "irda" about $60 i recall.

linux - unsure.

worth well, without the addons - $700-900 i guess in gd condition. As it does not even have a modem.
If u add modem/ethernet and IRDA add $200. IRDA is optional thou don't think IRDA will improve the price by any.

connect to internet - use USB ADSL/56k modem. Or the mini pci modem only card.
network - use PCMCIA or the mini pci card usually installed under the keyboard like a laptop stick of RAM then install drivers. Make sure u have the correct drivers. I have this problem sort of .. see my latest post "isoltae network problem". Network can also use network device via USB? port.

eBay.com is ur best friend with mini pci.

135573 2003-04-13 22:49:00 check ur laptop mini card slot type. they may be a bit diff with the todays standards. this i know wif a IBM P2 233 compared to nowadays and the previous 1-2yr models. they are slightly diff so they will not work. make sure u research prior....

hope this helps.

135574 2003-04-13 23:01:00 If by squeezing the lower screen gives you the correct colours in the stripes, then it could need just a dismantle and clean. Depends on make/model, but a lot used a rubberlike block between the LCD screen and the circuit board, which contains conductor strips in it. May be worth a query to repair shop, but get a quote/estimate first. Pheonix (280)

Id suggest you use and External Monitor over trying to fix it.. could be nasty :-)

Brand new, under $90 each?

Errr... IrDA is for File-Transfer only.. and its not the fastest..
You can buy a USB > IrDA (Infrared) or USB > Bluetooth for about $80 from DSE, but you're better off going with a PCMCIA NIC :-)

Yeah, depending on how much RAM, if its 64MB or less Id suggest you search google for XFCE Window Manager (4 MB Download) and use that, otherwise, Go with RedHat ma man (I'm gonna post you the CD's tomorrow :-))!

Not a lot with a bunged up screen - Id say a max of $250-300... You're best bet is to use it as some sort of server, or sell it with an ol' monitor to somebody who wants it for that purpose :-)

Hope this helps :D

Cheers

In terms of the screen if its that bad. Umm.. yes up to $300. $400 maybe if its got a modem and/or LAN internal. Hence I said $700 in gd condition :-D
