135386 2003-04-13 04:13:00 Hello all, I have just set up a small home network yesterday, consisting of the following:

PC No.1 (PIII 550, 384MB Ram, 17GB, Win XP Pro)
PC No.2 (PIII 700, 128MB Ram, 6.4GB, Win XP Pro)
UTP Network Cable
Gigabyte 5-Port (incl. Uplink) Hub Switch

Yesterday, it was all working fine, (everything was). But this morning I have found problems. When I share files, PC No. 1 has no problems accessing the Shared Files folder on PC No.2, However, No.2 has problems accessing No.1.

I'm pretty sure it has all been set up correctly. All logged in and access granted. Whenever, I open up "My Network Places" from No.2 and click on "SharedDocs on Main Computer", it freezes, so I do:

Ctrl + Alt +Delete >which opens the Windows Task Manager, then Click on the Applications tab> it shows that the "My Network Places" as been "Not Responding" under Status.

So I click on End Task>...OK....... Suddenly the whole screen disappears except for the wallpaper for approximately 30 seconds, then comes back normal.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Many thanks in advance,

135387 2003-04-13 04:25:00 Also, I forgotten to mention that when I open up "My Network Places" > expand "Network Tasks" on the left, > click on "View workgroup computers" it also happens.

So it seems to me that No.2 computer can't access/detect the network, but the No.1 can access/detect No.2. I'm pretty sure I've got it set up properly, as it worked fine yesterday.

Many thanks,

135388 2003-04-13 04:30:00 I have xp pro too. And yea the screen does dissappear for 10secs or so on my 1.1ghz when you do what you described.

I think maybe xp is just slow. I don't know why it does it. Try waiting a bit longer for it to get into the workgroup etc.

I found that Mapping the Network drive can speed it up heaps too. Just map the shared folder and stuff you need.

135389 2003-04-13 04:37:00 *No . 2 should be faster*

Thanks for your quick reply, I might try your suggestion, any others?

I think time is not the issue here as the status is displayed as been "Not Responding" . I have just tied it a few times now, and a message pops up now saying . . .

" . . . is not accessible . You might not have permission to use this network resource . Contact the admininsrator of this server to find out if ytou have access permission .

The Network Path was not found"

ok . . . . so how do I check from my No . 1 computer whether permission has been granted . Pretty sure it has, haven't disabled anything, btw, I ran the Network Setup Wizard when setting this up . Is this anything to do with IP that should be manually set . . . (I know nothing about it)

Thanks very much,

135390 2003-04-13 04:42:00 Argh! The No. 1 computer is having the same problem now. Could it be hardware failure? However, both computers can still access the internet, No. 2 just can't access No. 1's printer, and both can't access each others files now...... ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)
135391 2003-04-13 07:44:00 Update:

No.2 can see No.1, but No.1 cannot see No.2

135392 2003-04-13 09:21:00 The best place to start with problems like this is with the ping command - ping the IP number of the other PC. This will confirm network connectivity. If you can ping, then there are setup problems that need to be resolved. JohnD (509)
135393 2003-04-13 09:25:00 UPDATE:

This issue has be solved. I believe the file sharing facility needs to have firewall disabled when you want to use it. I've disabled it and therefore work fine.

Many thanks to readers of this posting,

135394 2003-04-13 09:43:00 YOu shouldn't disable the firewall. Instead open the ports for file sharing (137-139 from memory). JohnD (509)
135395 2003-04-13 10:06:00 Could you tell me how to open the ports?

Thanks,
