135348 2003-04-12 22:58:00 I have recently built a new system with an Athlon XP 2000+ CPU in it. Currently the CPU sits around 49 degrees Celsius when being pushed. I want to cool this a bit further and have decided to go out and buy a ThermalTake CPU fan. Which CPU fan in the Volcano fan series is the best to go for?

Thanks,
Wintertide

135349 2003-04-13 00:37:00 read around.. the best two places on the net to look at for cooling IMO are dansdata and frostytech

what kind of budget do you have to spend on an HSF? If money isnt a problem you'll do far better with an Alpha Novatek PAL8045, Thermalright AX7, a Swiftech, or a Zalman flower. You can do far better than ThermalTake. Just like everything else, its a situation where you get what you pay for...

135350 2003-04-13 01:01:00 I'm getting a Volcano 11 ($60 inc. P&P) on monday/tuesday for my shiney new 2100+. I'll let you know how it goes.

Its currently running at only 40 degrees max which I assume is because of the hardcore fans on my icute psu.

135352 2003-04-17 07:18:00 OK, heres my brief review of the volcano 11 as promised.

I didn't install the thermal sensor because the wires were too fat to fit between the processor & the socket nicely, putting it on an angle. I didn't try squashing them.

As far as noise goes. At 1600rpm its barely audible. At 2200rpm it matches the AMD cooler. At 5200rpm it will drive you nuts _very_ quickly.

Temperature wise, with the fan speed set to the minimum of 1600rpm. I get a maximum of 39 degrees which is the same as my AMD cooler, but a quite a bit quieter (so my $60 wasn't wasted).

With the fan at max speed it drops to 31 degrees, maybe lower I couldn't stand the noise.

The only bad things I have are:
- The fan/grill sometimes rattles when its at low speeds & sitting horizontally.
- The extra wires are a bit messy.
- They didn't supply anything to insulate the unused pins on the temp/manual speed control connector which almost shorted out on my PSU.

The end.

135354 2003-04-18 08:55:00 I have tried thermaltake volcano 7+ cooling fans and like others, have found them to be noisey, especially at medium and high speeds. A much better cpu cooler, in my opinion, is the Global Win cak4-88t. A visit to ascent's site will give you all the specs, basically it uses the same heatsink as the thermaltake, but has an adapter and runs an auto speed control 80mm fan. very quiet. I use these in all my boxes.
hth.

135355 2003-04-19 04:08:00 Yes, I wouldn't reccomend a volcano if you're planning on running it anywhere full speed.

I seems to produce a lot of noise for the air flow. Also the noise is more like an electric drill than what "normal" fans produce.

Still, no complaints running it at < 2200 rpm speeds.

I would reccomend it to anyone looking to a cheap way to make their computer quieter. The volcano 9 is only $40 and performs similar to the volcano 11.
