My question is, do you have to 'connect' each time you turn computer on or can be setup so that by switching computer on it will automatically connect with out the 'connect to' box appearing.

When you turn off your PC, the modem will stop getting its support from the PC CPU, and disconnect.
Its the "Winmodem" version of an ADSL modem, plus the added overheads of USB.

To quote from the specs:

By taking advantage of the processing power available with today's computers and eliminating the need for a separate micro controller supporting the ATM Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) function, this DSE Modem in a cost-effective ADSL solution

My guess is that you will need to reconnect therefore.
