135500 2003-04-13 12:16:00 How do I block users on my network from using MSN Messenger?

I have a 20 user network sitting behind a router for e-mail and browsing. My users do not have a work requirement for using instant messaging. (although I could enable it just at lunch time! ) ;)

My router has the ability to block sites or networks and I can block "ports" at sites etc..

Question is what ports at what sites or networks do I need to block to stop messenger logging in?

135501 2003-04-13 12:47:00 Well a quick google search leads me to believe that its port 1863. Block it and then try MSN. segfault (655)
135502 2003-04-13 12:54:00 If your router has the abilty to block outgoing sites ping MSN and then block that ISP eg the 250.0.0.1 number mikebartnz (21)
135503 2003-04-13 12:55:00 That worked for a while.. But newer versions of MSN have become more cleaver and now try using other ports.

A while back I could block MSN by banning the 64.4.13.0/255.255.255.0 network. Probably did not need to block the whole 256 address range but it worked.. Now it does not.

135504 2003-04-13 13:15:00 Hi

Block site in sofware firewall using "SiteName or URL*.*" sans quotes. Can do this or something similar using Agnitum Outpost. If you use the minimum address for accessing that url it should block all.

135505 2003-04-13 20:00:00 Otherwise you could do several things:
"Block msgr . hotmail . com" which is where MSN Messenger connects to, computers like baym-cs186 . msgr . hotmail . com when it has successfully connected
Block "msnialogin . passport . com" as that is the Server MSN uses to validate passwords, etc
Otherwise, Depending on the computing capability of the users on your network, you could just tell MSN to use a proxy server, and then as the proxy doesn't exist, it won't be able to connect, or you could find a free proxy server, run it on your machine, and get tell MSN to use the proxy server, therefore meaning all you have to do is enable the proxy at lunch

135506 2003-04-15 11:32:00 Thanks to all

Seam to have got to the bottom of this and it was more simple than I thought.

Have added messenger.hotmail.com (207.46.104.20) to my banlist.

I will keep you posted if this stops working.. :|
