135947 2003-04-16 09:14:00 cable was bought from DSE. i got a weblink and checked the wires. seems ok

www.netspec.com

i will ask them to do a cable test sometime. hopefully i not need to go to the hub solution at home wif only 2PCs.

135948 2003-04-16 22:13:00 i rather not use a hueb, since when i travel i have to bring this damn hub wif me too.

with a hub is to possible to ping it to check that (1) PC - like using it as a loopback cable. if so how to??

135949 2003-04-17 03:29:00 A hub is "transparent". It doesn't exist on the network, unless it's a big and expensive managed one, which will have an IP address so it can be administered remotely. Some even have a serial console port.

Switches would be the same.

A desperation effort: take the crossover cable to work, and try it instead of the straight one. If it works, it's not a crossover. :D Sometimes cables are labelled wrongly. I don't like crossover cables ... they introduce confusion. Anyone else who has worked with the RS232 nonstandard will know why I feel like that. ;-) :_|

Yes, the cable is a crossover . I have tried it at work .
Yes, i was told to use a router to test the card . this i cannot afford :(

however i was desperate to do another test:
==============
using the same crossover cable

Desktop with win2k, PCI 3Com etherlink 3 10 card .
Laptop with win2k, builtin 3Com onboard LAN .

When I ping:
Desktop to laptop I got request time out, 100% loss .
Laptop to desktop I got 0% loss, all fine .
The disconnect/connect flashes on taskbar always happened on the laptop, the taskbar was always connected on the desktop . even now when the desktop has the cable taken off - ??

This is both dynamic Ip and static .

I changed the PCI card to generic 10 LAN card on a different PCI slot . win2k called the card a realtek .
Desktop was connected .
Laptop was disconnected always .

Ping was then no way possible . This is both dynamic IP address and static .

My static settings:
Desktop: 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 (IP)
255 . 255 . 255 . 0 (subnet mask)
192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (default gateway)

LAptop
192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (IP)255 . 255 . 255 . 0 (subnet mask)
192 . 168 . 0 . 1 (default gateway)

135951 2003-04-17 07:11:00 the laptop lan card has problems restarting, so i have to shutdown then start up again.

i know its the lan card. since b4 i upgraded it it was fine. when i added the lan this thing happened. if i take the lan card out now, it will restart fine....
