I have XP Pro and plays Max Payne and these relatively old games with no problems.

XP is unstable for playing *old* games. It should be fine with recent games, and the not too old games.

The problem must lie somewhere else...?

135858 2003-04-15 05:03:00 If you're using on board sound (ie the motherboard is supplying sound) try lowering your sound acceleration in DirectX

Run dxdiag.exe (search for the file in the Windows or System32 directory).

Select the sound tab and slide the sound accelerator slide bar to basic.

Hope this fixes your problem (this is a common problem).

Other possible reasons are

1. Wrong video driver
2. Video card not grunty enough
3. Lack of RAM
4. Lack of disk space
5. CPU not grunty enough

135859 2003-04-15 07:02:00 I tryed setting the sound to basic and it made no difference. I have played the games on this computer before and had no problems. It is a P3 866 with 256 ram, 64 mb mx440 vga. The computer is fine.
Only when I run games or dxdiag.exe the CPU clocks out and stays there.
When I run dxdiag.exe it dose it's check and then the CPU locks at 100% unless I click on the window as if I am going to move it. It then drops back to it normal rate, but as soon as i let the window go it gose back to 100%. In all other windows it runs fine?:|

135860 2003-04-16 05:05:00 That's not how my DX9 . 1 behaves in my W2Kpro PC .

Can you list the System Information from the first tab of Dxdiag . exe?

It will have info like DX version, amount of RAM etc .

135861 2003-04-29 06:57:00 to me, it isn't your system (bar the windows xp)
it's all windows xp's problems. I have a Athlon 2700+ with 512 mb of ddr ram, and a 64mn geforce4. I xperience lock ups as well, on games like diablo 2.
All you need to do, is update the drivers for the pc, (graphics card etc) and then go to google.com and search fot the latest patch for your desired game. I have found no 'old' games work unless the patches are downloaded, and installed.

135862 2003-04-29 07:09:00 Another idea, try disabling your antivirus and see if that eases the problem. Some AV programs check each file opened to make sure it is not a virus. Also, have you defragged recently? Pheonix (280)
