135715 2003-04-14 10:31:00 Hi All

I would like some advice on hosting services. Ive set up a SOHO consulting business (no not IT you can relax now ;) ) and want to do the murrayp@??.nz email addys and have a small site hosted for marketing and linking purposes.

I've had a quick look at hosting.freeparking.co.nz
and http://www.registerdirect.co.nz/ as a start.

Have you had any experience with these companies or similar? What pitfalls should I whatch out for?

Thanks in advance

I have been with Freeparking for over a year now. They have been excellent, and I have had no problems whatsoever.

very informative site as well.

Cheers

135720 2003-04-14 21:50:00 $50/ year gets your name registered with register-direct (http://registerdirect.co.nz/) another $100 gets them hosting your site.
Of course you can point your name at free space, such as orcons, but this does produce some problems as yousite.co.nz/my_services.htm will not exsist, let alone bookmark.

135721 2003-04-14 22:15:00 O yeah... Once you get your name with register direct, you get the email thing working there and then.. Welcome to having whatever_you_want@your_domain.co.nz as working addresses. Theres 10 mailboxes (pick up points) provided, and/or one can forward harry@your_domain.co.nz to harrys exsisting address. It works well.

Using the mailboxes provided is a good idea, as they are a good size and it gets around problems like some have had with say only being able to pick up mail from Xtras pop3 servers if you are connected to the net via xtra.

135722 2003-04-15 01:16:00 You can get web hosting from $20 at
WebStarters (http://www.websitehosters.co.nz) or a website package for a $1- per day or $ 30 at month :) you can have own e-mail address & domain name.

If you interested is this or need more information please e-mail me at stuartw*at*webstarters*co*nz

135724 2003-04-15 06:20:00 Thanks for the info everyone.

I've got a few hours research to do by the looks of it. Thanks Stu will be in touch. Clue thats 2 votes for RegisterDirect, a mate in Auck also recommended them. James, its just going to be the best little site ever but I don't feel confident to be learning something like hosting my own site and keeping it stable/online enough to provide a credible contact point for customers. However my son wants to set up a page or 2 so thats a diff matter isn't it.

Food for thought :)
