136129 2003-04-16 01:16:00 Okay it happens to other people, but twice in 7 days ? 60 Gig HD crashed on Friday the 4th, was diagnosed and replaced. It was 2 years old. The 2nd lasted 7 days and took a hell of a lot of data with it. Both went in the BootUp area.

Both brands were Seagate. This Industry still has a long way to go.

Any bets on the longevity of No. 3 ?

136130 2003-04-16 01:34:00 if number 3 goes you might want to review both yourself and your hardware... you could have a bung IDE controller for all you know whetu (237)
136131 2003-04-16 01:41:00 are you sure they replaced it ?? it wouldn't be the first time i've seen a drive "replaced" with the old one that has been lowlevel formated.

strange that both went in the "bootup area".

the other thing to check is the bios. if certain bios settings get changed it can corupt data on the disk which makes it look like a dying drive.

136132 2003-04-16 01:44:00 How high were they dropped from? I was looking at the label on one of the disk I have collected over the years, and saw a warning that the guarantee didn't apply if it had been dropped (flat) from a height of ¾". :D Graham L (2)
136133 2003-04-16 04:31:00 I have lost 3 drives in the last year.
Maxtor (2 years old, controller failure)

Maxtor (replacement for #1,) started developing a lot of bad sectors, replaced under warranty.

Seagate, developed bad sectors, 5 months old. Replaced under warranty.

Not all from the same PC either

136134 2003-04-16 08:47:00 I know your pain...and everytime I say to myself, next time I'll back it up...

Barracuda 3 30g- Failed after six months (Last year)
Barracuda 4 40g- Failed after one year (This year)
Barracuda 4 40g- Failed after six months (This year)

They all seem to do the "clicking" thing and luckily I have found that taking it to work I can read it on another box - for a brief period; whether its the ride there knocking something loose or the magical powers within this box I couldn't say, best not to question these things.

That said, in proporition I have another dozen Barracuda 4's which I have been using for a year without any problems, so I guess its just one of those things.
