136292 2003-04-22 14:13:00 Hi Billy, it's me again .

I followed your instructions, this time, I managed to get all the computers connecting to the Internet without any problem - both independently and sharing with other PCs - it's really great!

However, all the PCs are not communicating! I can't ping (or see) each other!

I used the Wizard to set up the network connection and selected the option: " . . . . all PCs are connected to the hub . . . . "

Is there any other way to set up the network other than using the Wizard?

You don't have the XP Firewall on the LAN connection do you??

How do I check whether the XP Firewall is on or off?

Thanks

136295 2003-04-23 02:21:00 Read up in the XP Help files Bk. I don't use XP so I can't advise, though others might know the answer.

Cheers

136296 2003-04-23 12:28:00 Thanks cyberchuck .

I've just disabled the XP firewall and everything is working as expected - at last! So, XP's firewall was the culprit . I didn't pay attention to this firewall because I have Zone Alarm installed on the 'host' PC!

Just a matter of discussion, I do agree with XP's connection Wizard's comments saying that it is not secured and recommended to set up a network where all the computers are conected (and accessing the Internet) to the hub .

Comments on the above, please .

However, I wish to thank all those who have contributed towards solving my problem in the last couple of days . And, of course, thank you, PressF1 for providing the 'space' .

Cheers

As I very much doubt that your machines will be DDOSing eachother behind the router, then a firewall for the LAN would seem pretty pointless, however as this is arguable, does the Router have NAT enabled? Otherwise, you could enable XP's firewall and let then tell the firewall that it's allowed to connect to the router for internet access . . .

136298 2003-04-23 21:39:00 Just an update!
. microsoft . com/windowsxp/pro/using/itpro/securing/enableicf . asp" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com tells you how to allow services through the XP Firewall so they would be able to access the router .
Depending what you use, depends on what goes . However, if you are going to re-enable the XP Firewall I would start off by allowing HTTP, HTTPS, FTP (if you browse FTP Sites), SMTP and POP3/IMAP4 (if you use your computers for handling emails and dependant on your ISP's settings) .
Other stuff can be added easily by Just clicking the ADD button down the bottom

136299 2003-04-24 00:28:00 Woo Hoo :)

That's great news Bk!

I'm pleased you have got it all together at last.

One minor point, the Ni500 Router offers very good security and I find that the only use I have for ZoneAlarm is for control over which programs can make connections to the outside world.

I recommend that you try Shields Up (grc.com) to test your security and I think you will find that you are well protected.

I went to Shields Up and tested my network. As you said, my network is very secured.

Thanks, once again.
