136169 2003-04-16 22:07:00 1 . You can get free software which will monitor your internet usage . It was featured in a PC World or Netguide (can't remember which) mid-last year .

2 . Norton Antivirus/Firewall etc . 2001 doesn't work well with XP . Any version higher than that (Norton Antivirus, Firewall, Internet Security etc . 2002 or 2003 WILL work properly .

3 . Yes . Just disable AVG . It's in its options somewhere, as I've done it before .

4 . Although unlikely, a trojan or virus or worm or something could have logged your dial-up account password etc . and sent it somewhere . However this is very unlikely, but it's still a possiblilty .

5 . If NAV finds anything, get it to fix it . If you can't, and it's a non-important file, get it to delete it .

6 . Do you have any friends/family which may have managed to guess your password? If it was obvious, someone who knows you could have made a wild guess and found it .

7 . As Lizzie . B said, Xtra would have mountainloads of log files to trace through, as to exactly when and where a person used your logon .

8 . Do you have your account names and passwords on sticky notes lying around your computer/ monitor /desk /wall?

136171 2003-04-17 01:14:00 can someone tell me what IPSec service alert is and does this have anything to do with security or lack of it on my computer?

136172 2003-04-17 01:23:00 same think happened to me
$1000 net bill for 2 months WTF
i only used my dial up once (after swiching to jetstart)
i called them got them to change the password
it happed again (how did they find the password, not thew me or my PC)
so i called up and got them to change it and not to give it out to anyone
i think they called xtra and said "do you know my password?"(xtra only too happy to help gave it out)

136173 2003-04-17 03:16:00 beetle: is "work" and "home" the same place, and same phoneline?

Scout: XTRA don't know the password . They can't afford to know the password . What they store is the encrypted password . When you log in , what you enter is encrypted and compared with the saved value . They can give you a new password, but they will insist that you change it immediately, so they don't know your password .

Of course someone with enough privilege can run a password cracker on the password file, but that would be (a) logged, (b) strongly frowned on, (c) not worth their while: anyone at that level can get any internet time they want . ) Anyone in the "help" centre would not be able to run such a thing .

Lizzie B . : What you describe is normal use . What I referred to is simultaneous logins under the same user code on the same line, which is not normal use . (And not possible in beetle's case, it seems) .

136174 2003-04-17 03:32:00 Too many ISP Helpdesk give out the password over the phone without firstly verifying who they are.

In my job, when I'm setting up internet connections I have to sometimes called on behalf of the person/company to get their password to set it up because they've forgotten what it was. I've not once called up and haven't been able to get the password off them, some do ask for a lot of details which I think is good, but others have just said it without getting more information.

I have been turned down cancelling an account via the phone though and they offered to let me know the last time this account was accessed (what good is that when I'm cancelling it?) and told me to do it through their website (which doesn't load correctly if you have adblockers).

136175 2003-04-17 03:45:00 You will not have received the forgotten password, Kame. You will have been given a new password. If you have reason to suspect you got the actual password, get the supervisor, and there will be one vacancy at the help desk. (I suppose it's easier to just make a new password, without explaining password security to users :D) Graham L (2)
136176 2003-04-17 08:18:00 i agree with Graeme L. When i rang the Xtra helpdesk a few days ago, I had to go thru several verification processes, that someone who was not me wouldn't know. Lizzie.B (3233)
136177 2003-04-17 11:08:00 yes same phone line for computer, i get access for work online and play off same phone .
but that is not the work number it is our private number .
we actually have 3 incoming lines . 1 work, 1 fax / phone and 1 private number . its a bit stressfull here when al three lines here i tell you, and only 1 person to answer it .

we run a motel .

so does this mean anything? phone wise?

i cannot switch plugs acidentally as only have private one by puter, and would need a long long cord to connect to work jackpoint down other end of house or up the stairs to 2nd floor . . . . . . . .
