136158 2003-04-16 05:54:00 Perhaps before going home from work you logged in to check your mail, then turned off the computer without logging out. That could rack up (possibly a long weekend's worth) your connect time. Or do ISPs still log you out after x minutes of inactivity?

It might not be the mean evil crackers out there. :D

136159 2003-04-16 09:37:00 hi guys, no ideas this end why or how it happened, and if you think my sister did this, she has only just learnt that you have to write something in a email not just in the subject line so i dont think so. but hey im lost otherwise.

and when i checked at her house i did not tick remeber password. so ?

and the firewall is ? dunno whatever one came with winXP i guess.

i have looked at it before and it seemed to be fine but just at this moment still dont remember how....

and this is my work and personal computer.....one and only.... at the moment.

im stumped.
susan B helped me to set up my alias to email, will that have something to do with it? outgoings mainly. as it otherwise goes into folder in OE?

136161 2003-04-16 10:01:00 I reckon, (and believe) that if you are for sure that you have done nothing to incur those charges, and that no body, such as family or flat mates, have used these, your best bet would be to go forward as Xtra has suggested, if you have the financial ability to do so . If you believe it is not worth taking the risk, how about paying off the extras, if not much, and doing a fresh start, i . e . Format and reinstall with the tightest security, and maybe consider getting a new logan name and password, or change to a different ISP completely .

At the moment, like already been said in one of the other posts, Xtra is not getting a lot of very satified customers . Surely, they should know who accessed it without having to charge $200 .

Hopefully, they know its someone else, and wants you to sue them, in order to earn them $200 .

Right, time for a nap, hopefully they'll ring tomorrow with good news . . . . :D

Are you referring to the pple on this site who are dissastisfied. 6 or 7 pple out of the 100,000+ is not going to put Xtra into any sort of panic-mode

They are not a charity. My bro works for Xtra, and its a complicated job trying to trace who/where. Its not exactly Xtras fault. Its the person with the hijacted log-ons till its prooved otherwise

136163 2003-04-16 10:23:00 Ihug are nice and send us a friendly email every time Im online on the Road with my laptop and they are at home too.. Just reminding us somebody may have found out our password and to change it! Chilling_Silence (9)
136164 2003-04-16 10:53:00 Just change your password.

Monitor usage.

If it happens again then do the trace.

"and then he said that i would have to pay that if they found it to have come from my house"

I would take this to mean that if it is not of your doing then you wont have to pay.

136165 2003-04-16 11:01:00 yes i think that is what he meant but you never can tell .

hopefully it wont happen again .

i have changed password . monitor usage? mine you mean ? i just check times and stuff on my account details, etc on the appropriate web home page . have never worried about how much or how little i used before .

may start a diary!

but heaps of people must do this, the checking bit i mean, but wouldnt you feel real stink if it was from your house?

it worries me to think i that lax someone got into the system or something like that .
and if they think it comes from here . . . . . how on earth would i have done that?
hhmmmm?

Haven't you heard of internet sharing . Plenty of people share the same ISP Account [login/password #] - eg:Family member One family member uses the computer at night, while Family member Two (inanother part of town) uses the computer during the day . The trick is to make sure that you don't both use it as one .

You didn't try this did you Beetle?

Graham L if you do a search, you will see there have been several PressF1 postings on this very subject
