136212 2003-04-16 07:14:00 I just switched on my second PC and it switched off again immediately. I tried several times, all with the same response. It is a PC Company PC bought in 2000. How can I find out what is wrong with it and how to fix it? flyer590 (2523)
136213 2003-04-16 08:15:00 Thats a difficult question to answer.

Its like ringing up the Garage and saying "my car won't start, tell me whats wrong"

There are probably about 4,000 reasons. It could be your Power Supply, or one of a thousand components on your Motherboard, Video Card, Modem, Sound Card, Network Card, etc etc..

The list of possibilities is too great, if you have a spare PSU, try swapping etc.

Or, for the simplest solution, take it to a PC shop and ask for a quote to repair it. You may have to pay for the quote remember.

136214 2003-04-16 08:19:00 Yeah, I see what you mean. I don't use this PC much, so sometime I might try swapping the PSU from my newer PC or taking it into a PC shop for a quote. flyer590 (2523)

136216 2003-04-16 08:47:00 does the main spower supply and fan go?? is their lights on the case??

if no - replace the main power supply.

if yes there is power. then strip ur system down taking all the cards apart from the video and one stick of ram. take out all the drives out too. and see if it works. then put HDD in and see if boots, if not take that out and stick floppy in and try booting wif diskette.

disconnect all external peripherals too. leave the monitor and mouse and keyb on.

Looks like a new power supply may be in order then. ;-)

136218 2003-04-17 03:40:00 If it "starts up normally for a few seconds" the power supply is probably OK. Something is overloading it, and it shuts down -- which it is designed to do. Graham L (2)
136219 2003-04-17 05:07:00 Actually, that says "starts up normally for a few split seconds" which makes me think that it is probably the power supply more than anything else. flyer590 (2523)
136220 2003-04-17 05:09:00 I'd still try unplugging things, before I spent any money. But I hate spending money. :D Graham L (2)
136221 2003-04-17 05:24:00 Maybe I will try that sometime. It doesn't have much stuff in it anyway. flyer590 (2523)
