| 135993 | 2003-04-15 10:00:00 | My son in London is trying to upgrade from Win 95 to Win 98 and being a Mac user I am not familiar with installing Win systems so any suggestions appreciated. This is what he sent me, not a lot of information but all I have at this stage. I am falling at the first post. I want to retain system settings and programs, and the instructions are to use the setup wizard that starts when you insert the CD. The wizard doesn't start automatically though, so the alt instructions are to click Start, Run... and type the location of the setup file (something like d:\setup) which starts the Windows 98 Setup wizard. But I can't find the setup folder. |

While your son can upgrade from 95 to 98, I would suggest he do a clean install for best results. He has several years of garbage files on his hard drive just waiting to screw up his installation. Yes it takes longer, but it'll be better in the long run. If he insists on an upgrade, does he have the upgrade cd and not an oem one? It won't allow an upgrade with the later (there is a way around it though). Also, he should have at least 128MB of ram if he wants decent performance. And some older machines just doen't like 98 (personal experience). Have fun! g |
