136573 2003-04-17 20:21:00 It would be bit of a bugger if you were doing something at the computer, there was a power black out and you lost all your work.

It a bit hard to save power when as it is you don't waste power to start with,

136574 2003-04-18 00:02:00 If you're worried about losing data you will save regularly and you will have a UPS.

I myself to save power are only running a PC when I need to and turning on other ones when I don't REALLY need to be using htem.

136578 2003-04-18 07:33:00 HQ I suppose stands for hard question.

Saving power is an interesting topic. The best way to get some constructive action is to write to Pete Hodgson asking his government to sort out a rational sensible electricity policy.

That has been a sore topic and a total source of govt confusion and waste of taxpayers money for a lot of years now.

Once (upon a time, as the fairy tale goes) there was a thing called the PFUC (try pronouncing that out loud). Acronym for [b]P[b/]ower and [b]F[b/]inance [b]U[b/]tilisation [b]C[b/]ommittee.

It was set up by the then govt and composed primarily of engineers. As we know engineers get their kicks out of building things, preferably at someone else's expense.

The PFUC's standard technique was to produce some fairytale (putting it mildly) "projections" of electricity "demand" and in effect threaten the govt with "shortages, restrictions and blackouts" if they didn't get enough (taxpayers) money to carry out their pet projects, which at one time included nuclear power (luckily that one was stopped by a few far-sighted individuals).

Anyway, the upshot is that this approach ultimately led to why electricity seems short in supply now, why spot prices are so high and why exhortations to "save power" are become more strident.

And unfortunately it seems this Labour govt is thinking of bringing back something like the PFUC - that is, just what caused much of the problem in the first place.

It's a longstanding and sad story of bungling and ineptitude.

Ah well, that's what comes of shooting off one's mouth on senstive topics.

136581 2003-04-18 09:05:00 You won't save much by turning off the monitor. The only way to really save is not to use the heaTER so much and to cut down on the time yu have in the shower. Even kill two birds with one stone by saving water and power by having a sharing the shower with someone else. Thats what we do in Balclutha anyways LOL Lizzie.B (3233)
