136363 2003-04-17 00:06:00 I have Zone Alarm on my system, making sure that nobody hacks my PC, as I'm on Broadband, always connected, etc. (If you don't have this free product, go to www.zonelabs.com and download the free version)

I have a recurring message saying that sysconf.exe wants to access the internet, which I decline, as I don't know what it is. I've searched for references to it, but these are few and I think irrelevant. It has also popped up saying it wants to act as a server, which is alarming.

Sysconf.exe lives in C:\windows\system32 and was created on the 15th of this month - my PC and OS is 7 months old.

My Virus scan doesn't come up with anything, but I'm sure the file shouldn't be there.

Any ideas what it is / what to do?

That's all I could find in Google. Have a look,

136365 2003-04-17 00:48:00 I saw that, Mark, thanks - I don't think it is relevant in this case. However, my daughter did load some cursor changing software on the 15th, and this had some spyware attached. I uninstalled it - (AND took away admin priviledges for her) I suppose this must be leftover from that.

Can anyone with XP confirm that they DON'T have this file? I'm going to delete it. If you don't hear anymore from me, you know I've trashed my system. ;o)

136366 2003-04-17 01:00:00 B-) and be interesting to know the outcome. Sounds so much like Sysconfig that could cause heaps of confusion.

136368 2003-04-17 11:39:00 Its not in my XP Pro...I would delete it. PoWa (203)
136369 2003-04-17 11:42:00 Find the sysconf.exe file, right click on it...It might have some clues about where its from or who its made by.

Do you have Nortons Antivirus or Internet Security? They would pick it up if its a trojan or something. As long as ZoneAlarm is blocking it everytime it tries to access the net, you won't have any problems.

136370 2003-04-17 12:33:00 Have you thought of renaming it to something like sysconf.crp and if nothing is affected after a couple of weeks, then delete it. Much safer that way. Pheonix (280)
136371 2003-04-17 20:18:00 I don't have it on XP home in C:\windows\system32... Trev0 (1995)

On this page on about the first or second post there is another link as well which gives uninstall instructions to remove the sysconf.exe.
What is the purpose of the exe I am unsure. I would be inclined to block it always within ZA and rename the file and see if that causes any problems before touching it further.
