136343 2003-04-16 21:54:00 Hi,
Could anyone please tell me what a dvdrom drive could be useful for (apart from watching movies), or is that about the only thing that you can do with it?
As my cdrw drive has given up the ghost, I was thinking of getting a CDRW/DVDROM combination.
I was looking at 2 drives and wondered if anyone has any ideas on which would be better.
They are:
LG 48X24X48 CDRW&16X DVD ROM Combo D009 - $189 or
Samsung 32x10x40 16x DVD Combo - $183
Thanks
Jase

136344 2003-04-16 22:11:00 I would definetely recommend the LG one. Just from the specs, the CDRW part of it is as fast as normal CD RW drives (almost), and the DVD ROM part is also fast. It's a lot to get for an extra $6

Some new software comes out on DVD ROM. Some software which includes interactive things, which can't all fit on a CD, the software manufacturer will put on a DVD. Also once DVD RW's become more popular (and cheaper), you will be able to use your DVD ROM to read discs which people have burnt (or you have burnt if you decide to invest in one). Note that DVDs have 4.3GB of storage.

136346 2003-04-16 22:36:00 When I bought mine the salesperson advised me not to get a combo but get two seperate drive, I thought why, but then he explained that combo drives dont last as long because they do twice as much work as having two drives and if you are copying cd syou dont have to make an image you can copy on the fly off the other drive. Made sense to me so thats what I did. Its just as cheap to buy two drives $7 diff on mine and the combo i was looking at. DVD drive is good for lots of things. if you have tv out with, a bit of tweaking you can watch dvd on your big screen tv and maybe even copy them to keep. zip1nz (2251)
136347 2003-04-17 01:16:00 Watching DVDs if you can't afford to get a stand-alone player as well. You can always output to the TV if you've got the gears as well.

Main reason being that sometimes it's just worth the extra money to get the DVD-ROM over a CD-ROM also more and more software is coming out on DVD now. Some magazines even only have a DVD on the cover.

The other main reason for getting a DVD-ROM.... well I won't go into that.
