| 136338 | 2003-04-16 18:24:00 | Is it possible for xtra dial-up users to connect through the xtra proxy? I currently have IE set to do this, but none of my other apps will, they just get denied access, so I am wondering if IE is simply bypassing it? | SpiderVenom (1412) | ||
| 136339 | 2003-04-16 23:22:00 | I would say that IE is simply bypassing the proxy if other programs are not successfully using the proxy server. One way to confirm this would be when your connected to the internet, and have IE Open, click Start and then click Run, type "WINIPCFG" (without quotation marks) if you are on Win9x or WinME, otherwise type "WINIPCFG" (without quotation marks) and then type "NETSTAT" (once more without the quote marks). If IE is connecting via the Xtra Proxy, then there will be connections to proxy.xtra.co.nz However, looking at Xtra's website (www.xtra.co.nz) about their Proxy Server Connections, it says that it is for HTTP and FTP traffic only, which could explain why you are getting access denied messages. Have you tried telling the other apps that they are to use an HTTP Proxy? CyberChuck |

If IE is connecting via the Xtra Proxy, then > there will be connections to proxy.xtra.co.nz Sorry, I lied... On Win9x and WinME Start > RUN Type "COMMAND" (without the quote marks) Type "NETSTAT" (without the quote marks) This will list all your internet and network connections.. There should be connections going to proxy.xtra.co.nz if IE is open and using the proxy On Win2k and WinXP Start > RUN Type "CMD" (without the quote marks) Type "NETSTAT" (without the quote marks) This will list all your internet and network connections.. There should be connections going to proxy.xtra.co.nz if IE is open and using the proxy Sorry about that CyberChuck |

| 136341 | 2003-04-18 20:41:00 | Thnx, I tried your advice, and yes, IE is connecting to the proxy server. Also, when I type in an invalid url, it gives me an error page from the proxy, instead of IE's standard. IE connects to the proxy fine, until I start AdSubtract PRO. AdSubtract changes the proxy server to itself, so I configured it with proxy.xtra.co.nz on 8080 as the next hop. For a while it will work fine, then AdSubtract complains it can't connect - yet it has been all the time (I know from the invalid url error message test). I have told other apps to use an HTTP Proxy, but no luck. However, if these apps are using a dial-up connection, won't they be automatically routed through the proxy? *I have only configured IE to use the xtra proxy for HTTP and FTP |

Ooh (decides to tell IE to use a proxy and take a looksie!) :p > IE connects to the proxy fine, until I start AdSubtract PRO. I assume AdSubtract Pro is a program which blocks internet ads and stuff?? Have you tried using a different proxy server to see if you get better results?? Ihug have a free Proxy which you could try out ("proxy.akl.ihug.co.nz" without the quote marks - port 8080), otherwise you could download SpyBot Search and Destroy (have a search on google) which has a HOSTS file containing URL's of Ad Servers and so forth, so if you put the HOSTS file in your C:\Windows directory then you wont get ads and you can connect straight to Xtra's Proxy. This would work as IE and other programs would think that the ads are loading from your computer, which they are not, and therefore will not show?!? Comprende?? - sorry - it's kind've a dodgy explanation > I have told other apps to use an HTTP Proxy, but no luck. However, if > These apps are using a dial-up connection, won't they be automatically > routed through the proxy? Nope - they'll be connecting straight to the internet using your computer as a gateway. That is why on networks, Internet programs can access the internet straight away (usually) - they just head for their gateway and they've got net access. You've got to manually tell programs that they have to use a Proxy Server should you want to use one. > *I have only configured IE to use the xtra proxy for HTTP and FTP That's a start :D - could be quite awkward if your getting an HTTP/FTP Proxy Server to manage Telnet and gopher requests :p CyberChuck |
