136552 2003-04-18 06:21:00 It only has pcmcia sllots...no pci slots. And I don't particularly want to buy another video card for it PoWa (203)
136553 2003-04-18 06:27:00 If it is a desktop/tower model then it would have ISA slots. Disconnect all drives by removing the grey leads (noting position and orientation). And start. Does anything appear on the screen. BTW, DO NOT connect/disconnect leads while powered up. Give the PC ~10 secs to discharge before changing leads. If nothing appears on screen, and you have 2 sticks of RAM, remove one and try, then replace it with the other and try. If nothing happens, then the choice is between the motherboard and the video card that is faulty. Pheonix (280)
136554 2003-04-18 07:35:00 Unlikely since the video card is initailised long before any drives . However it is not beyond the realms of possibility .

Check the power leads are correctly orientated - though the physical shape makes it difficult to do usually - red closest to the IDE cable .

Ensure the red marked lead on the IDE cable plugs into the #1 pin on the device . Removing the device to check may be required .

It is also possible that it is the memory .

It is also possible that it could be anything including that minor thing you did but haven't yet mentioned . . . . . . .

136555 2003-04-18 07:37:00 Also, what happens when you power up without the video card installed? Merlin (503)
136556 2003-04-18 09:14:00 I had a similar problem with a 486 and believe me its not worth trying to fix. Do what I did and file it in the round bin. drys (347)
136557 2003-04-18 09:53:00 Its got 8 sticks of ram, each 1mb -lol.

I dont want to throw it away, it could be useful as a hardware firewall..

I'm gonna try a few things said here, then get back to yas..

136558 2003-04-18 10:02:00 Whoa!

I unplugged the grey cables (well those wide things - are they called ide?)from the hard drive, floppy, and cdrom...

Anyway, I got the bios screen to show up on the monitor and it loaded up fine... :D But it won't boot past there - no hard drive connected obviously..

Now what do I do...did I put the hard drivecables etc in the wrong way or something???

136559 2003-04-18 12:26:00 What did you use for a "beeper counter"?, Sorry just being nosey E.ric (351)
136560 2003-04-18 12:29:00 *Wohoo* I think everythings in order now. I can boot into dos, with cdrom and hard drive back in, everything working great.

I wonder why it wouldnt work in the first place. Maybe I overloaded the ide cable?? Before I had one cable for both the cdrom and hard drive. Everything was real cramped and I was having trouble putting the cables into the cdrom and hdd. Luckily I found a spare ide cable in the machine that I'd overlooked and used that for the hard drive. :D hehe

Unfortunately this bios is so old I can't boot from cd. And I need to to install my firewall programme. Anyone know of a dos boot disk that will allow me to install from a cd?? Sounds absurd I know ...
