Can use all ports on hub

No light on hub when laptop connected to it . The laptop has two lights, a green one and an orange one . Green one flashes, no sign of the orange .

Loopback ping works ok

I just unplugged a working network connection from the back of one PC (I logged off first) and then plugged that cable into the laptop and fired the laptop up . Magic - I could ping the hub and the other PC on the network, and could reach the web!

So I then went downstairs and unplugged the cable which goes from the switch into the wall for that node and connected it directly to the laptop . Absolutely dead!

This cable and the switch must be working as when I plug the cable back into the wall the appropriate port lights come on on the switch and I can go back upstairs and access the network on the related desktop . But when I plug the cable directly from the switch into the laptop I can't make a connection .

Accessing the network on the Laptop from further down the line has now established, I think, that there is no hardware problem on the Laptop nor any IP configuration problem .

I'm now hopelessly confused! Can anyone offer any sort of suggestion / guidance / explanation?

Or should I wait until tomorrow and see if my laptop rises again????

No - unfortunately no miraculous Easter event as far as my network is concerned... Anyone have any ideas?

136518 2003-04-21 04:04:00 ... a little progress.

I have managed to get the laptop to connect to the network, but only with certain cables...

I have some 3m blue Dick Smith cables, which I used to be able to connect with, but now I can't raise the network from the laptop when I connect using these.

I have taken the cable from 1 of the desktops, however, (a different make (and colour)) and can connect successfully to the network with the laptop from all nodes when I use this particular cable.

Suggests like a dodgy cable or cables? But the cables that don't work with the laptop do still work when I try to connect using the desktop!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why my cables should be so choosy about which computers they are prepared to work with?

Thanks.

136519 2003-04-21 06:38:00 Ours is not reason why. Welcome the the world of the unexpained. Only expend enough energy to get working what you want to work. If you found a cable that works just leave it and use it. Dont analyse too much welcome to the Computer Techo world. Ignorance is bliss as long as the network is stable and running.
