136399 2003-04-17 03:49:00 I've had many attempts at installing Linux, with all the times failing.

I tried installing it from a CD, but it froze saying it couldn't access a particular package. Tried 2 times, all failed. I gave it to a friend, who had a go, who had the same problem, but then worked out it was the CD ROM drive which had caused the problem as he managed to install it successfully on a different computer.

Now I want to try and install it over a network, and want to know how to do it, and if it's possible.

Can I copy the CDs to a folder on my WinXP Home machine, and set up a web server to point to that folder. I have got a crossover network cable set up between the computer I intend to install Linux on, and the WinXP machine. The network is currently a Win98SE->WinXP Home.

I have found documentation about installing from a computer running Linux, but not from a WinXP machine.

I've looked on the boot disk, following instructions, but cannot find any instructions which say "Install using HTTP".

136400 2003-04-17 03:55:00 No, I don't think anyone has done an install through http. :D An FTP server would do it. Graham L (2)
136401 2003-04-17 03:57:00 How would I do that? I can't find any option on the installation menu on the boot disk from Linux which lets me choose that option.

I'm really new to Linux, so sorry if I ask dumb questions.

136402 2003-04-17 04:15:00 Should be OK. The Red Hat Installation (www.redhat.com) manual gives it as an option. (Even http !)

Have a look at this from Stanford university (linux.stanford.edu), too.

136403 2003-04-17 05:03:00 You might need to select "text mode" -- I haven't done an install for so long. I've just found a book which came with a RH 6.2 CD. The Installation information gives the choices as: Local CD Rom, NFS image, hard drive, FTP, SMB image. "SMB image" might be the simplest. That's the MS sharing protocol, which Linux has a better implemenattion of. :D Just share the CD on the XP machine. (Remember it will want a account/password). Graham L (2)
