136349 2003-04-16 17:52:00 Hi,
When starting up Windows XP professional the startup process will get past the loading indicators, then the scandisk (checkdisk) startup saying that something has changed this seems to complete itself, then the system reboots. This happens every time?
Generally I reformat the drive and reinstall, and it will work fine for a month or a few month or what ever then the same thing occurs. This has happened about 4 times in the space of year. Could someone help me with this please. I am running a Duron 95oMHz CPU with 256SDR, and nothing else out of the norm. I have Windows 98se as well and this problem never comes up?
If anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated...

136350 2003-04-16 23:45:00 Be wary of updates and do a image backup of your C: drive so that a reinstallation is only 10 mins save all important data to another drive etc kiwibeat (304)
136351 2003-04-17 05:07:00 It would pay to change the default action for failures so that it gives you some information rather than rebooting. Some Windows expert will tell you how to do that. :D Graham L (2)
136352 2003-04-17 05:29:00 Start|Control Panel|System|Advanced|

Click on Settings in the Startup and Recovery section at the bottom, and untick "Automatically Restart"

OK your way out.

That will cause a bluescreen error, with info, instead of a restart

136353 2003-04-17 08:53:00 All good advice above!!

One other thing:-
You can run Win98 but have problems with WinXP as far as I see it. Have you run the WinXP compatibility test that will be on the WinXP CD? If not then do so before re-installing.

Hope this helps.

136354 2003-04-19 16:37:00 Thanx for your reply. I have reinstalled win xp now, and have done as you have suggested, by unticking the automatically restart option. I am still unsure of the reasons for XP behaving in this way. Do you think it has anything to do with having multiple operating systems on the same computer. Previously I was using V-COm's System commander v7.05. With two partitions, one for 98se and one for XP. Now I have done away with that all together, but am afraid of the same occuring and having no other operating system to continue doing work on, untill I have time to reinstall. Which you could probably amagine, is somthing that I do not want to do everytime, as this takes time and wasted effort. Thanks again for your help, and I will hope that this problem does not raise its ugly face again. Cheers! joeflies256 (387)
