2003-04-19 08:20:00 | Hi all, my pc is rebooting randomly, although I have noticed a pattern to it, I havn't been able to pin point a fix (although I've tried many). The patterns are it will only ever reboot while I am on the net, and have IE6 open. It will not reboot if I am connected to the net, but only have Outlook Express or Winmx open. When the reboot happens, the mouse cursor will freeze for around 3 or 4 seconds first. There is no timespan to the reboot, sometimes 1 min, sometimes 1hr. Repair option on IE made no difference. Some websites will cause it to reboot (eg. if I'm going into a site & it reboots, once it restarts again, trying the same site will reboot again straght away. This is not limited to one particular site though). I have searched alot on the subject (inbetween random reboots), and most suggestions point to power supply or ram failure, but I beleive if this were so, I should be getting rebooted when not on the net as well. It sounds like a virus or trojan also, but I have deleted all cookies, emptied all temp internet folders, run updated nortons antivirus, I run a firewall. i am running win98 on my original p2 333, which has had no recent software or hardware installed. I have tried selective startup, still does it. Not sure what's left for options apart from reformat. Any ideas please... | TJMC (548) | |

2003-04-19 09:11:00 | I have a similar problem, reboot quite often while im on the internet. Have just learned to live with it | superOman (745) | |
2003-04-19 10:01:00 | live with it? not for me. I have already run checks for spyware (adaware & spybot), although they have picked up things, the reboots still occur (so far 6 or 7 times in the last 2 - 3 hrs). As for going back to IE5.5, I've been using IE6 since it's release and never had a single problem before. I might check out the index.dat option. let ya know. | TJMC (548) | |
2003-04-19 10:06:00 | just checking, I have found 3 index.dat files on my pc, the largest one (1680KB) is the normal one I presume (in c:\windows\temporary internet files\content.ie5). The other two are 48KB (c:\windows\cookies) & 16KB (c:\windows\userdata). Are there supposed to be 3? | TJMC (548) | |
2003-04-19 10:12:00 | over heating?? my system would reboot when i played games and it turned out that pushing the cpu harder caused it heat to go up and the bios was set to shutdown it too hot. the result was random re-boots when pushing the system.

2003-04-19 10:20:00 | don't believe so (over heating) as it will do it from a cold start, and will also only do it when using IE. (I can be gaming, scanning, typing, working, running apps etc all at once, but it will not reboot then. | TJMC (548) | |
2003-04-19 11:40:00 | yes there is ment to be 3. 1680kb isstarting to get big. might pay to clean it out just to eliminate it as the cause. the other thing to try is run system file checker and see if any files are corrupt.
