136946 2003-04-19 06:43:00 Hi - around lunchtime today I got up made a cup of coffee and decided that I would watch some movies off my computer through my TV. So, as I have done many a time before, I pulled the cables and shifted it to the lounge - but - when I turned it on, it got as far as loading my desktop, and a few startup programs, then it reset itself, no STOP messages or ERROR messages, just a cold restart. I thought that this was weird, maybe some one off error of some unknown sort, as usual after a cold restart check disk came on and started checking things out, but instead of the usual two sections - I think, i cant ever remember there being more than two there, the file verification check or something then the something or other check - anyway - this time there were three sections to the check dsk. The first 'normal' two then a security check of some kind, I hadn't seen that before, but I supposed it couldn't be bad. So the computer restarted itself and pulled off the same trick that I told you about right near the start of this message, happened again, a cold restart out of the blue. This happened again, and again, until I thought I would come on here because I had no idea whatsoever was going on. Here are some specs of my computer: AMD Duron 1.3ghz, 250mb DDR Ram, 40g hd, Gigabyte GA-7VA K7 Triron 400 mb - and software - Windows XP Professional, Office XP Professional, Zone Alarm Pro (with latest update), Norton Antivirus 2003 Professional, I have just installed the latest NVidia XP display drivers, and yesterday, I installed all the updates (bar the new windows media player). Last night though, auto update was downloading some other updates. They most of yesterday and all last night to download, and in the morning today I installed them, one of them I seem to remember was a security update, and the other a critical update of some kind. It has been scince installing those updates that my computer has reset itself. Does any one know whats happening, and what I can do about it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
-Jordan

136947 2003-04-19 06:53:00 use the 'system restore' feature of xp, that should get you back working again, restore to a time prior to the 'updates', you may have to reinstall the updates one at a time, to find the one that corrupted your system.

no i can't - it shows the list of files that it loads, staays on that screen for quite a while then resets itself. Can I use system restore without being able to load windows up - does the XP cd have a system restore feature?
BTW. I've noticed the computer clicks just before it resets itself, does this mean anything, I seem to recall on another computer, a blue screen of death flashing as well as the click, this computer was a lot slower than mine, maybe mine actually does have an error screen, but it flashes on and off again to fast to see...

136950 2003-04-19 08:05:00 the xp cd has a repair feature, at this stage it may be your best option, although it may depend on what has corrupted your system. insert xp cd and follow instructions.
failing that........format and reinstall windows :_|

136952 2003-04-19 08:50:00 one thing to check before reinstalling windows etc is to check that you havn't disurbed any connection when you moved it. check the cards are seated ok and that the cpu and psu fans are working. very easy to get a loose cable stuck in the cpu fan and have it overheat. tweak'e (174)
136953 2003-04-19 11:48:00 I've got the same mobo. The click on reboot is the pc speaker, nothing to worry about. bmason (508)

136955 2003-04-19 18:28:00 I think I had a similar problem here. Some advice that was given to me was 'be careful when making updates'. "If it ain't broke don't try and fix it" sort of thing. Anyway If I remember back to when My XP pro did the same thing at restart, I imediately remembered the mistake. I have a feeling that the latest NVidia Universal or somthing a rather driver that I downloaded form the website and installed, did it!
Next time I rebooted the same thing happend and I could not get back in. Safe mode, last known good what ever, all of them trhe same result. The computer continually getting so far in the startup without making it and then rebooting!!!
I flaged everything and reinstalled Windows eventually...
Generally when windows has problems I have found that it is due to installing un needed software and drivers etc. The more you install and uninstall the more unstable the system becomes. Anyway other than that said, I cant help...But I know what it is like! Hope you have better luck than me!!!!!
