136937 2003-04-19 06:35:00 Hi all

I have Win XP Pro. I have just tried to view some .avi files on my computer which have the RealOne Player icon next to them. I think RealOne was on my computer when I purchased it in August last year. Anyway, when I double-clicked the file I wanted to play I got the message "The version of RealOne Player has expired. Please connect to the Internet and press 'Update' to automatically begin downloading the latest version of RealOne Player."

So I right clicked the file and chose Open with, and chose Windows Media Player instead, and the file played as it should. I then selected Windows Media Player and ticked the box 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.' The icons all changed to Media Player but when I double clicked any file they still wanted to open in RealPlayer. After rebooting the icons all changed back to RealPlayer.

Is my only option to download the most recent RealOne Player? Or is there another way I can associate the files to Windows Media Player? And why would RealOne Player expire anyway? Is it not free?

Your comments are most welcome.

136938 2003-04-19 06:58:00 RealOne Player has an annoying "feature" which reclaims files that are associated with it in it's list.

To make it stop reclaiming .avi files when you restart, open RealOne then go to Tools -> Preferences. Go the the 'Media Types' category in the left pane (under Content). Scroll down to the MPEG and AVI video section and remove the tick next to AVI Video (avi). Also make sure 'Periodically check my system to maintain these preferences while RealOne Player is not running' is not ticked. Click OK.

It's possible that your computer came with a beta version of RealOne Player which had an automatic expiry date in it.
There is a security flaw in early versions of RealOne Player which can let a hacker take control of your computer, so you'd be best to update it (if you still need it). To update it just go to the Tools menu and click 'Check for Update', then follow the steps. Otherwise just uninstall it.

Thanks for the info. I did some research on the Internet and found out what you just said. As I cannot open RealOne Player with it being expired to change the options I read somewhere to open the player you want and change the options in there. So I went to Windows Media Player, chose Tools, Options, File Types and ticked the Video File box. So far so good. I guess I will have to live with the RealOne icons though.

Thanks for your help.

136940 2003-04-19 07:59:00 Well, what I thought worked has not. For some reason the settings in Windows Media Player will not stick. They seem to stick for a few minutes, and then realone player wants to be the default program.

Does this mean I have no choice but to download the new version of real player and then in there disable the options?

136941 2003-04-19 08:02:00 Yes, as Stevie says, Real stuff is very invasive.

I had a similar problem a while ago. The advice I received here on PF1, was to install "Regcleaner" and use it to remove all references of Real stuff. That is assuming you wish to do that.

It worked fine, and all associations are back to normal.

The regcleaner is available free from here:

136942 2003-04-19 09:05:00 Since RealOne won't let you do anything, i'd give it the boot by opening My Computer -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, then select RealOne Player and click Remove. Hopefully it should let you at least do this. To finish off, try the program Bazza mentioned to remove every last trace.
Once RealOne is gone from your computer, any changes you make in Windows Media Player *should* stick.
Then if you really want a working copy of RealOne Player, just go to the Real.com website (http://www.real.com/) and look to the top right of their website for the free player link and download from there.

Many thanks for your advice. I removed RealOne Player like you suggested and can now at last associate Windows Media Player with .avi and .mpg files.

136945 2003-04-24 11:42:00 If you want a less anoying version of realplayer head over to http://www . oldversion . com and grab a previous release .

Realplayer 8 isn't too bad after its been tamed, and it won't force you to update (although it will ask you) .
