136886 2003-04-19 05:52:00 I have been using Debian 3.0r1 With Kde desktop.

I decided to install Gnome 2.2 but the Desktop and Taskbars are all floating and I have to position them all the time. Also I have to position each opened window the click the mouse to activate, reminds me of fvm etc..

Anyone know how to get it to function like a normal desktop.. Am I missing a package? It logs in as Gnome-session.

Also a recommendation on what to install to get opengl working, and how to test it would be of great help as I want to try out some gl games on it. (Games like billard-gl and Tux Racer start, they just run at 1-2 fps) I supposibly have the SIS 3d acelleration drivers installed. (I know SIS should probably put in a Nvidia card, but I want to see if I can get it to work.)

Thanks for your help, (Any Debian Experts that would like to spare some time for a willing student would be welcome to reply :) )

136887 2003-04-22 04:26:00 I'm told that Debian is for real enthusiasts. Real Unix people don't use wimpy GUIs. :D There's probably a whole online manual for Gnome by now. At a guess there will be a www.gnome.org site. :D

apt-get might help you with installing packages. It looks to be very good.

But when you want to bring home WinDoze users into the Linux world a desktop like KDE or Gnome is the best way.

It looks like it might be a Bug in Gnome as using the older version fixes the problem. I think though I will teach them KDE (3.1.1) as it seems the most likey one for them to convert to.

Debian is for the Enthusiasts, but one you go there and find the support of the community oh Mumma!! :) From and ex Red Hat fanatic - I will never go back!

136889 2003-04-22 08:02:00 You might like to try asking on #gnome @ irc.gnome.org or at http://www.gnomesupport.org

As for getting OpenGL to work using the SiS chip - it won't work. Blame SiS for not contributing to make some decent drivers.
