136825 2003-04-18 23:41:00 I was on the Internet a short while ago and a message popped up to give a warning that my IP address was being broadcast over the Internet and I could have the PC attacked. I logged off from the Internet.
Also ran Ad-Aware 6.0 but there was nothing new.

I have Windows Me.

What would cause this ? Likely to re-occur ?

136826 2003-04-18 23:50:00 You need a popup stopper. It was put there by the website you were visiting.

It was only scare tactics. I doubt if your IP addy was being broadcast anywhere

>IP address was being broadcast over the Internet

136828 2003-04-19 00:39:00 Yes, I had got one of those ads also - it said that I was the 15 million person to access the site and had won a big prize. I did not wait around to try to collect as I thought it was just a thing to try to get me hooked in _ I am learning (though for a moment it was tempting !)

:) :)

Thanks for putting my my at rest re the warning

:)

136829 2003-04-19 00:45:00 Thanks tweak'e - I have run the check that you suggested and it says all fine. Great to know !

136830 2003-04-19 03:05:00 I'd like to take this time to thank tweak'e.

I went into that "Shields Up" site, and got my comp. security checked out , and in both areas my computer has an excellent bill of health, which is good news for a newbie internet operator like me!...Thanks again tweak'e, kudos to you!

136831 2003-04-19 07:00:00 OMGOSH!! Someone needs to make a FAQ on this stupid topic. No offense intended :P I think this is about the 4th time in a month someone has asked this question -LOL

Someone make a FAQ, then everytime someone makes this topic we can just say:

"goto faq."

hahaha

136834 2003-04-19 23:23:00 The only problem here is that newbies tend not to take everything they find on the net with a grain of salt (yet).

This is why these ads work, and why in the last 2 months 3 people have kindly forwarded me a warning of a new killer teddybear virus , just after taking all the "good" advice as real, and deleting there own java-D-bugger. (yes the teddy bear hoax is an irish virus, effectively telling people to "please delete your own system")

Please, remember, if it is selling something, or trying to get you to install anything.. Don't beleive a word!!!!!

There are people using the net as an advertising medium who have less morals than used car salespeople.
