136749 2003-04-18 11:22:00 hey guys,

jus a quick question. what is the best way to courier a laptop?? And would anyone have an idea of a better courier company. Its a v thin laptop (1.2KG). Drives are all external on the docking station. I need to courier to Penrose to IBM's service centre for the network card examination. I have to pay courier since free courier pickups are only the 1st yr despite I have a 3yr one. Is bubble wrap enof with a fragile sticker?? I do not have any of my original packaging anymore.......

136750 2003-04-18 17:23:00 I would be inclined to use a sturdy heavy cardboard box somewhat larger than the laptop allowing heaps of extra room all round for packing with foam and bubble wrap. For the base and inside the top of the box a piece of baseboard or other thin wood to add strength to the structue of the box.

Increases the weight somewhat but you need to weigh up the cost of courier vs the cost of the laptop.

Fragile stickers by all means and if the company has a sign for option use that as well.

136751 2003-04-18 23:11:00 Yes. What Gordon said, and lots and lots of bubblewrap. I don't think reinforcing the box with wood is quite necessary, as most boxes of suitable size are reasonably sturdy.

My recommendation - if it means you pay more money, use NZ Post Couriers. I had my computer sent to me via Fastway Couriers, and they smashed a huge hole in the side of the box, and the computer. Now there's a dent in the side of my case, and the CD RW was completely stuffed - I replaced the CD Writer however.

Even though NZ Post Couriers are more expensive (about twice the cost of Fastway), from experience, the package will get there safer. Go for the Overnight Delivery option.

LOL, that is the firm where a lot of the couriers were busted for ripping off customers parcels

Personally, I would use NZCouriers - They don't charge by the weight, only the size of the carton. Just package the laptop in a sturdy box with heaps of packing (scrunched up newspaper is as good as any} AND make sure you tell them its a laptop. They will do the rest, regarding fragile stickers etc

136753 2003-04-18 23:46:00 a good cardboard box filled with polystryene and the laptop wrapped in plastic. the main thing is to have 2-4 inches of room all around the laptop (don't put the laptop on the bottom of the box!). the plastic is a must as this will stop any rub marks on it. as far a couriers go pay your money take your chances. i prefer NZ or XP. tweak'e (174)
