136746 2003-04-18 10:49:00 Computer has USB 2.0 support, hardware is a mix of USB 1 & 2.
Monitor has 4 port hub of unknown spec, it operates as long as the monitor is on or in power saving mode.
What determins the speed of the hub & cable, my limited knowledge tells me the hub is just a switch from 1 input to 4 outlets and the cable has no properties other than a piece of wire - therefore USB 2.0 in = USB 2.0 out.
This is obviously not true as they sell USB 2.0 Hubs and cables in the shops, can sombody please confirm it's necessary to use a USB 2.0 Hub for maximium performance - making my existing monitor hub redundant.

136747 2003-04-18 10:55:00 Hubs are more than "splitters"
The fact your monitor based hub is only operative when power is available at the monitor suggests its also a powered hub, wouldn't you agree?. (As opposed to a hub that draws its power from the host USB cable from the computer). That allows full current devices to operate, instead of sharing the 1 power allocation

If its USB 1.1 then it will not operate at USB 2 speeds. Make sure if you buy one its a hub with an external power source, to be on the safe side.

136748 2003-04-18 12:53:00 That sounds fine, so I use the Monitor hub for v1.1 and the computer for v2.0.
The cost of an additional add-in card for 4 ports (v2.0) against a remote hub (v2.0) would be a personal preference and no performance loss either way.
This is the choice to be made at a later date when more than 5 USB 2.0 ports are required, not discounting I can hot swap 1 or 2 peripherals out on a temperary basis.
Thanks for your help
