136715 2003-04-18 08:20:00 Hello,

I am currently able to receive all e-mails in Outlook Express having set up my Orcon email account there. I have set it to pop3.orcon.net.nz to receive emails. However, I am not able to send emails to anyone other than Orcon. Because when I do, I get the follwing:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'x@hotmail.com'. Subject '', Account: 'pop3.orcon.net.nz', Server: 'smtp.orcon.net.nz', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 <X@hotmail.com>... Relaying denied. Proper authentication required.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Where "x" is shown, it is the e-mail address ;-)

What have I done wrong? I have tried both pop3 and smtp for outgoing, but both don't seem to be working.... Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

136718 2003-04-18 09:20:00 Your not the only person with your problem, I am also having the same problem as you. & I have e-mail orcon about this as well.

Have a read of the "System Status" this is what it says:

Pop before SMTP

Modified: Wed 5th, 09:31 AM

We are just upgrading the way that POP before SMTP works, to optimise the performance on the mail servers.

"Pop before SMTP" is a feature that means that if you are connecting through another ISP you can send out our mail server, providing that you receive email first. This should only be an issue for a short time.

In other words you cant sent e-mail throw orcon at the moment

Is this your ISP or do you have a website account e.g. yourname.orcon.net.nz???

136720 2003-04-18 10:10:00 Yes, my Orcon account is a separate one to my ISP. I need/am using it because I need to access e-mail other than webmails on my secondary networked computer...

I will wait for good news :D

Many thanks for the notice,

136721 2003-04-18 11:23:00 Set your SMTP outgoing server address to the one for the ISP you dialing into and connecting with.

It appears Orcon POP before SMTP is not working but you won't have a problem sending through the outgoing server of your ISP which is the normal way and usually the only way allowed to prevent mail relaying.

136723 2003-04-21 01:15:00 Ok, the Pop before SMTP (Pop4) actually works fine.

As I understand it.
But it requires you to check your e-mail first (pop), before sending e-mail (smtp). As when you check your e-mail, you authenticate and a msg is sent to the smtp server to allow outgoing e-mails from that IP. This expires about 10minutes after authentication. Try testing this, check e-mail, then send an e-mail a minute later.

So, the problem arises when sending e-mails, if you send the e-mail from clicking on a url in your browser, or sending a file through explorer (send to -> mail recipient), Outlook (Express) will always send the e-mail before checking for mail, so the SMTP server won't know who you are and will block the e-mail, with the message relaying denied.
The second way I know of the problem occurring, is that the default "check for mail" is set at 30 minutes, so even if you leave your mail client open, every now and then you won't be "allowed" to send e-mails.

Work arounds:
The SMTP server doesn't accept direct authentication attempts, so we can't use that feature in Outlook Express and others.
So, you can set your mail client to check for email every 5 minutes or so.
And/or, the best way is to just set your outgoing mail server to be that of your ISP. eg: smtp.xtra.co.nz , etc.

Hope this helps. :)
