137428 2003-04-21 05:50:00 I know this helpdesk would come in handy one day ;)

I am now having some computer problems :(.

One in a while as I am doing something on it, it total looks up on me & the screen goes all funnily with lines in some places. (Next time it happens I will tack a pic of my screen) & I can’t do a ctrl+Alt+del to reboot it or to try & end some things.

When it happens I only have 6 or 7 thing open e.g. IE (5.5) (3- 4 Windows), Outlook Express (5.5) Windows Explorer, & some other apps.

& Resource Meter tell me that I am only using (system resources) aprox 40-37% free that is still in the green area I can go lower then that with out much problem ;).

I have Win ME

If you need any more information about my hardware or any thing else please ask.

Any ideas why this is happening???

Is it software or hardware playing up?????
I guess it is my graphs card playing up (because I have had problems with on onboard graphs a few months back so dad had stick a graphs card in)

137429 2003-04-21 05:56:00 Sounds very much like video drivers. Have you got the newest driver for your vid card? Pheonix (280)

Ok, you have stump me here ;)

When you are talking about video drivers are you talking about the drives that work the graphs card???

137431 2003-04-21 06:22:00 Each device has a driver so Windows know how to talk to it. Most are provided by microsoft within their windows system. Most often, video & sound cards require a driver (interpreter if you wish) provided by the manufacturer. If you right click on My Computer and choose properties. Then click on the hardware TAB, you will find a list of devices in your computer. Click on the Video adapter and another branch will come out and tell you what type of video card you have. Double click it and look for the driver TAB, and it will give some numbers which is the driver version. But normally, once you know what type of video card you have, just search on google for drivers. If unsure, post back here what type of video card, and someone will give you an address for the latest driver. Pheonix (280)

137435 2003-04-23 06:15:00 Hmmm... I would try disabling your on board graphics through the bios. The yellow exclamation mark indicates a conflict.

If "the screen goes all funny with lines in some places" means a total lock up with a solid block of colour on the screen (could be any colour, but often green), with vertical parallel "three dimensional" lines, I have had that problem, and it was completely unpredictable, and could happen with only one programme running or many.

For what it is worth, I had those troubles after installing XP Pro, and I thought it was an installation problem (XP Pro installed over Win98SE). A formatting of the disk and fresh install did not shift the problem.

My techie diagnosed a display card fault. As it was time for an upgrade, I replaced the whole motherboard with onboard sound and video, and biffed the display card. No further troubles since that time.

137437 2003-04-23 07:03:00 Disable your onboard graphics (in the bios). Then delete the item with the yellow exclaimation mark.
Update your Geforce drivers to the latest ones (avaliable on the April PC World CD)

see if this fixes your problems.
