137278 2003-04-20 06:31:00 Hmmm my list would include (in no particular order):

"Nortons SystemsWorks (Professional) 2003" this includes Nortons Antivirus and my must-have Ghost program.
"Nortons Personal Firewall 2003" this program is great, although if I didn't have it I would have this firewall instead:
"Agnitums Outpost" as it is free and easy to use.
"Ad-aware 6"obviously to clean out any nasties lurking.
"Trillian"Instant messaging program, 4 'n' 1 so to speak.
"Infraview"for graphic viewing and editing.
"FTP Commander 5.90"free FTP program, very easy to use. Found here (www.internet-soft.com)
"OpenOffice 1.0.2"free office software programs that is generally compatible with Microsoft Office documents.
"Adobe Acrobat reader" a must have.

Browsers:
"Opera" it is so versatile and multi-functional.
"CrazyBrowser" another free tabbed browser, very nice but unfortunately cannot live on my system anymore without NAV taking exception to it.

I think that is all :-)

137284 2003-04-20 07:42:00 I used to have a set amount of things that I install after a reinstall. Now I just work on a [b]When I need it[/url] basis. So I don't install Office until I actually have a need for it.

Most common apps though would be:
Mozilla/Phoenix - email, web, etc - free
PowerArchiver - compression program (zip, rar, etc) - pay if you want to get rid of the dialog box
FlashGet - downloading program - installed as shareware, just click a button on load
Trillian - instant messaging, ICQ/MSN/IRC/AOL/Y! all in one - free
Norton AntiVirus (or AVG(free))
Kerio - firewall - free

Most immediate thing after an install would be OS updates a whole host of reghacks.

137285 2003-04-20 07:45:00 For Sam:

"SuSE8"Quite a loverly operating system that i am still discovering the joys of.

"KMail"
My preffered email client.. tis a little lame with some handling of HTML mail, but many practical features.

"Konqueror" A web browser.

"Gaim" A multi function Instant messaging program. Works with ICQ, Yahoo messaging etc.

"gftp" My ftp client.

"pure-ftpd" My ftp server.

"GIMP" Graphic Image Manipulation Program. (I think thats what it stands for)

For Vanessa:

"Win 98"The last windows operating system i will ever get for myself.

"Nero" Its a damn fine CD buner program!

"Photoshop"
An even flasher graphics program than GIMP.

"ICQ" Free text messaging, IM too

137286 2003-04-20 07:58:00 In an order of no importance ....

~ Word 97 - expensive, complicated, more a DTP program than a text editor
~ Excel 97 - expensive, but the best flat file database around without having to use a database (u could hook one up though)
~ Access 97 - expensive, complicated, not for the feint hearted
~ Visual Studio .NET - cheap, don't know enough about it - yet - maybe one day I will
~ Notepad - great for creating websites
~ Norton WinDoctor/Antivirus - overpriced, overrated, but these two are gems. Easy to extend the 1 year warranty with each OS format/reinstall
~ Tiny Personal Firewall - free, better if you take the time to configure it
~ Mozilla - free, underated, way better than IE
~ PhotoImpact - free, easy intro to DTP applications
~ Nero - cheap, easy to use, reliable
~ ACDSee - cheap, efficient
~ Fast DNS - free, interesting results
~ RegCleaner - free
~ SpyBot - free, takes to much HD space though
~ Acrobat Reader - free, although this firm should release a Word plug in for free
