1335656 2013-04-06 13:37:00 My month old ASUS laptop will not shut down - this is the first time this has happened. Also won't restart, or even log off. There are no error messages, no visible evidence of trying to follow through at all. When I click on Start => Shutdown/Restart/Log off/Sleep/Hibernate, the menu simply closes. If I press my power button, it goes to sleep mode.

Please help!

1335657 2013-04-06 21:17:00 Sounds like something has screwed up. I had a similar thing with this netbook I fixed. It got stuck on downloading / installing a driver from windowsupdate (windows 7). That was the reason it hung on restart and shutdown. The wireless driver was probably corrupt (the driver that hung while installing)

If your updates are on auto, change it

1335658 2013-04-07 01:54:00 Thanks Speedy. I had forgotten in my 2am panic (Melbournite expat) to include that when I have successfully shut down so far, a message appears saying there are background programs running - which I have no knowledge of and can't see. It could well be automatic windows updates...I've changed it now as you suggested. Elizabeth (4411)
1335659 2013-04-07 03:51:00 Does it say the name of the program thats running in the background?? Sounds like its something thats in startup and it has probs closing when you shut down Speedy Gonzales (78)
1335660 2013-04-07 13:49:00 Elizabeth, if you go to your computer's Services you'll see what has automatically started. To shut it down manually, you've probably got a shutdown switch which may be underneath the computer. You'll need a straightened paperclip to press into the tiny hole. Be careful of course that you don't shake or bump it's running. Greg (193)
