| 1335541 | 2013-04-04 22:44:00 | For Windows 8, Windows Defender (with Microsoft Security Essentials's antivirus capabilities) comes built-in :) | pcuser42 (130) | ||
| 1335542 | 2013-04-04 23:26:00 | Best ??? Best free AV seems to change every 6 months :-) Try Avira or Avast. Good enough for most people. Avira has very annoying pop-ups though. |

Most threats these days are crapware that sneakily install alongside a legitimate application . You just have to be extra vigilant about clicking next to see if it wants to install extra goodies . If you have a bit of common sense it's unlikely that you'll need a decent aniti virus . In my opinion the only time you should really invest time and money into a really decent AV is if you have a business type environment, or an place where lots of people use a computer . For the most part, if you use discretion it's pretty hard to accidentally pick up a virus from nowhere . It's not like the early days anymore where you could just leave your computer on and end up with problems (which is good) . |

| 1335545 | 2013-04-07 09:26:00 | Everyone before me are correct, and I couldn't say any different >_< I use Avira though, and it does have annoying pop-ups, but those only occur when I am updating it, and not randomly anywhere else, others like to take up your boot time and display a message, like this one from AVG "Did you feel that? Your PC booted up 213% faster than usual." This resulted in my average boot time increasing by about 10 seconds. :badpc: |

| 1335546 | 2013-04-07 10:19:00 | AVG Pftttttttttt heap of rubbish, bloatware, total waste of time. Computer yesterday, had AVG, it decides to load 3 minutes after everything else had finished. Most threats these days are crapware that sneakily install alongside a legitimate application The FBI warning is doing the rounds again, bit stronger this time even stops booting into safe mode -- Found a good way of getting it out as well :) That's a different thread though. |

| 1335547 | 2013-04-07 10:22:00 | I removed AVG last week from someones 's PC. It made it slow as. And for some strange reason, I dont know if it was the cause of event viewer not opening / crashing. But as soon as I removed it, it opened / worked. Unless it was a program called total recipe that made it crash | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

Any hints, or just do the usuals, scan via another PC etc. It sounds like a cop-out, but its usually easier(& quicker) to just wipe & reload. Its not what people want to hear unfortunately. |
