1335029 2013-04-01 21:39:00 I've been having some issues with the front USB 3.0 ports on my case for a while now. System is as per my signature in a CM Storm Trooper case that has 2 USB 3.0 Ports on the front which share a single cable to the motherboard and two USB 2 Ports which also share a cable. First the left side port started playing up so I stopped using it and now the right hand port is starting to give me problems. The case is somewhere around 18 months- 2 yrs old I think, seems newer than that to me though, will try and find a receipt I usually keep them somewhere.

When a device is plugged into one of these ports, especially the left one, it will frequently appear and dissappear in windows as if it's being plugged in and out. What I'm trying to figure out is how to prove if it's the case ports or the motherboard causing the issue (occured to me as I type that there is another port on the motherboard so I'll switch and see what that does). If it's the case ports as I suspect does anyone know if it's possible to fix them somehow?.

I'm looking at getting a front drive bay adapter or a powered USB 3.0 hub as a work around but I'd rather the case ports worked. Stupidly the powered hub option is cheaper than a drive bay adapter for many brands. My case doesn't have a 3.5" bay either so I'd have to use an adapter.

I also have a similar problem with one of the rear USB 2.0 ports that I used to plug my keyboard into, but that one I put down to a loose connection and changed ports which so far seems to have fixed it. This one took a lot longer to start happening though and wiggling the connector can fix it which doesn't work with the front ones.

Any one have any suggestions or had similar problems, I've tried googling the issue for both the case and motherboard without much luck.

1335030 2013-04-01 22:40:00 Personally I would not entirely rule out a software problem

I've been having intermittent mouse problems and eventually decided to reinstall Windows from scratch. Before doing so I ran my first ever registry cleaner (CCleaner) - and it seems to have cured the problem. I didn't reinstall Windows

(I use the 2 front USB3 ports on my Sliverstone SG08 all the time. No problems)

1335031 2013-04-01 23:04:00 Might be worth running a Linux Live CD and testing it from there. My USB 3 port is very unreliable in Windows, but has never caused any issues in any Linux distro. Nick G (16709)

1335033 2013-04-02 00:10:00 Thanks guys seems like I missed trying some obvious things, feeling noobish now. I tried windows 8 and both ports seem to function fine, booted back to 7 and the problems were immediate with the left port. So I had a look at the drivers and they are 2011 vintage. Went to the asus website, grabbed new drivers and installed them, and now it looks like it's fixed. It'll take a few days to be sure but left port is working so far. I thought the front ports were an Asmedia controller but looking at the manual it seems they are Intel chipset ports and the Asmedia ones are on the back (along with another two intel ones). I upgraded both drivers anyway dugimodo (138)

1335035 2013-04-02 20:33:00 I'm not so sure about USB 3, HP made a fantastic design with their BIOS, if a USB 3 device is plugged into a USB 3 port, the computer won't boot :D

If the drivers check out clean but the problems not around in any *nix distro then I'd check software compatibility/other drivers interfering. Try driver fusion to clean out the USB 3 drivers, see if the stock windows USB 3 drivers work OK then upgrade to the latest ones.

1335036 2013-04-03 22:59:00 Whats the mobo, because there is a recent chipset / mobo with dodgy USB 3 ports on it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1335037 2013-04-04 01:02:00 Asus P8Z77-V Is the motherboard.

The left front port is definately playing up but the other three intel on board ports are fine. It seemed to be ok under windows 8 but it confuses me how it could be a software issue if it only effects 1 of 4 onboard intel USB 3 ports. I was wrong about the motherboard having another socket to try, there is only one. I will try windows 8 for a longer run tonight and see what happens.

What I do to test is simple. I plug a USB 3 stick in and carry on using the PC, every couple of minutes the flash drive dissappears and pops up as if it's just been plugged in again. It seemed to stop after updating the drivers but that was only an temporary illusion.

I may just buy a front USB 3.5" bay adapter anyway to prove it out of the case wiring, providing I can find one that's not too pricey.

1335038 2013-04-04 01:24:00 I'm pretty sure I saw a site where it said there was a prob with Z77 mobos somewhere / something to do with USB 3 . Just trying to remember what site it was. It was a PC mag site

This sound similar?? (www.tomshardware.com). Its the same mobo

And info about USB 3 here on the Intel site (communities.intel.com)
